In Moscow, the clumsy director Andy Clarke is making a slasher movie in a studio set with Russian and American cast and crew. The responsible for the makeup is the mute Billy Hughes, who is the sister of Andy's girlfriend Karen Hughes. One day, Billy needs to find a mask for the shot on the next day and she stays after hours in the studio set seeking out the object. However, the janitor locks her in the studio alone and Billy cannot find a way out. When Billy sees light in the studio, she accidentally witnesses the Russians Arkadi and Lyosha making a porn snuff movie and brutally killing a woman. Billy succeeds to escape, but the police officers do not trust on her. Further, the powerful Russian mafia chases her believing that Billy has a diskette with evidences against the mobsters.

If it's done in the style of Alfred Hitchcock, then it should be quite good.

This one fell apart for me about the time it became almost an espionage thriller, so overall I'm not a huge fan of MUTE WITNESS, but the first 1/4 or so of the film is brilliant. So suspenseful I chewed my fingernails until they bled, and some classic, unnerving shots (for those who have seen it, I'm thinking of the run down the hallway . . . very, very cool).

Ooh. While it sucks that most of the movie isn't all that great, its nice hearing that its at least super effective in the suspense department. I might give it a go someday. *shrug*

I enjoyed this film a lot, I remember when I first saw the first half was extremely suspenseful.

Needs to be watched in dark with good surround sound.

An under-rated, and definitely under-seen flick, this one. Someone mentioned above that at one point it turns into more of an espionage thriller, and that's true -- but the first half is pure gold. And even though it does switch genre gears near the mid-way part, the second half is still good.

You really feel for the heroine throughout. And this is what's so clever about the movie: Had she been a normal person, sans handicap, she probably never would have found herself in jeopardy at all. She could have easily talked herself out of danger, cleared up misunderstandings, called for help, or screamed to get someone's attention. Everthing she goes through relates directly to her inability to speak. Suspense scenes aside, that's why the film has been called Hitchockian, because it's about an otherwise normal person who finds themselves in a situation where their one flaw becomes their single greatest weakness. And director Anthonly Waller milks that weakness for all its worth.

I think I remember liking this one... I also think I remember the film changing tonally in the second half. The first half I remember being very dark, but the second is a little more fun and a bit cheesier?

Wrong film?
