![]() This film, with no dialogue at all, follows a psychotic young woman's nightmarish experiences through one skid-row night. |

I have, though obviously Laurel & Hardy is the wrong genre, but there were a lot of silent movies from them, ranging from 1917/1919 to about 1929. I'm sorry about adding them into this post as it was the first thing I thought of. Anyway, I'm sure this one is good. |

This movie struck an odd note to me. It had strong atmosphere and a compelling leading character made more so by the narration and direction of the movie. And it isn't completely silent, there's a narrator, background music (almost too much, probably overcompensating for almost no dialogue), laughter, and character reactions (screaming, movement, etc). However, it seems to be almost anti-feminist. A "mad" woman is remembering her "haunted" past, reminded by seeing the faces of those she's wronged around her--mainly a father and potential lovers. The structure of the film keeps it pretty surreal, the audience isn't sure how "real" some interactions are compared to others. The reveal of the protag's "haunted" past was underwhelming, and reactions to her after that are what struck the "anti-woman" chord with me. But the ending made me reconsider all of that, in the face of the power of guilt. 9/10 (because it makes me want to watch it again and again...). |

Was this one of the films playing in Halloween II? I remember the TV host being all, "Welcome back to Dementiaaaaa", lol. I'll probably be watching this tonight. |

I was pretty much hooked right away thanks to the weird, ominous, overdramatic opening monologue. The beach scene with the waves crashing down on the woman was pretty interesting and immediately made me think of Carnival Of Souls (and that sure as hell wasn't the ONLY thing here that made me think of that). I wanted to throw a shoe at her for wasting a cigarette after she woke up. I can't say I've seen many people light cigarettes, take two drags, and then throw them away like pretty much every character does in movies. Random little guy with the newspaper<3. It was random that the woman and that big guy (who was sort of gross and weird, seeming like he was just taking her places to make himself look good) went to like give clubs/bars in one night. I thought it was pretty cool that the dialogue was muted but we could still hear music, laughter, doors closing, and certain other noises. The woman's flashback to her childhood (that strange Spoiler: click to toggle was...interesting to say the least. I have to give the makers props for making a mostly simple story feel unique in some ways but that's mainly thanks to the style. The pacing didn't bother me too much either even if it was a bit sloppy from time to time. The bizarre imagery really saved this while the repeated narration (loved it at first but it got annoying) hurt it. I wish it had ended with the woman Spoiler: click to toggle Not a bad movie at all. 5-6/10 quality, 6.5/10 entertainment. |
