I remember when pretty much everyone at school gushed about this and how it was the scariest movie ever made. Ha...hahaha.

Horrible film. I liked the guy, the atmosphere and the masks but it did not scare me at all. Liv was also a moron in this movie. I gave it a 3/10 for the creepiness since that worked well.

I recall one moment that genuinely did get me jump (which is rare with movies), but the ending bugged me a lot and it was one of the major critiques about it later on [too predictable].

Yes there were plans, I don't know what happened to that, supposedly theres a script and everything, and it was gonna take place in a trailer park.
A trailer park could be interesting, since they usually set these things in a large and isolated house.

It's a pretty solid thriller but I probably would have thought more of it if I hadn't seen the French film THEM.

Does anyone remember the story behind this? I recall people on IMDb talking about the backstory years ago; something about the director witnessing a robbery or a B&E in his neighborhood or something. Any real ideas?

This was great at building tension.
I definitely agree with you. I think this film is too heavily criticized. I thought it was a decent movie with tons of unexpected jump scares and great at building tension...

I didn't think much of it. Some of the tension building is good, but that's about it

I thought this one was a pretty decent home invasion one. The masks were pretty creepy in it. When You're Next came out it reminded me a lot of this one, but I enjoyed You're Next more. For some reason there's an article about The Strangers in the latest Fangoria magazine which made me laugh... they were a little late on that one haha!

I was so hyped for this movie before it came out and I still loved it a great deal once it finally came out. I vividly remember choking on popcorn during the cupboard scene. So much tension, but with a pretty meh pay off. I felt that it would've been better if Liv managed to escape out of the house during the ending (whether she died or not after that is purely up in the air, but I just wish she did.)

I also wish that James did more.

But that scene where the man in the mask steps into the room while Liv is smoking that cigarette I'll never forget. I was in a semi-packed theater and the whole audience collectively held their breath. Everyone was on the edge of their seat. It was incredible.

This is a lot like what I wanted out of You're Next, but I didn't really get. You're Next did kind of have the ending that I wanted for this though. *shrugs*

I think making the killers seem almost phantom-like was a bad idea. Having them talk like real people and act like real people is scarier.

Because when they DO act like real people and talk like real people, we get some of the scariest dialogue in any horror film ever made: "Because you were home." The most terrifying horror movie line I've ever heard.

I heard a lot of good things about this movie, at the end of the movie I was total disappointed with this movie, it was entertaining, it was kind of predicable, like I seen this done before and much better.

(This movie did remind me a lot of Vacancy (2007), which can out one year before this movie , i think Vacancy (2007) was outstanding movie, i loved it.)

It had creepy moments... But meh. The dumb leads (moreso the girl, from memory. And wow did her actres suck) didn't really help either

Puppy, just because there's no evidence she killed her aunt doesn't make her dating material.

This was a movie that I loved when I first saw it, but while I still liked it when I watched it again recently, it honestly wasn't as good as I remembered it being. The main problem was with the couple we're supposed to be rooting for. I loved the killers and the general concept behind the film, but Kristen and James were both just incredibly bland. The acting wasn't the greatest, but more importantly, they're given no development or reason for us to care about them; we find out in the beginning that their relationship is in trouble after a failed marriage proposal, but that never comes up again. It's honestly why I preferred the sequel; there, I actually cared about the main characters and wanted them to win. Here, though, the proceedings just felt too cold and distant. It was well-made from a technical standpoint and pretty scary on its own, but it's just that: alright.

My full review of both this and its sequel is here.
