A sleazy cable-TV programmer begins to see his life and the future of media spin out of control in a very unusual fashion when he acquires a new kind of programming for his station.

Well, it's Chronenberg, so it's bound to be awesome.

This is right on the edge of being one of my favorite films. It's a bit too heavy handed and silly, but it's also one of the weirdest films ever made. Some of the special effects still hold up amazingly well. I really love the score, too. It's so subtly unsettling.

This one wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. The opening here is a bit of a disappointment, as the search for the mysterious transmissions and they're addictive quality takes over everything, a little strange in itself as there's very little in them which would warrant such an attraction in the first place, beyond a hypnotic quality to them this isn't all that interesting or even in the slightest bit horror-related. When the discovery is made about the truth to their origins, it gets a little better and a bit more interesting, especially with it's more graphic and vivid hallucinations, before really getting good in the final part where he begins hunting them down, which really earns the film the most enjoyable parts overall. It's still hard to get over the fact that the original transmissions aren't that interesting to warrant such attention to them, and the overall plan doesn't make sense, but it's still interesting enough to warrant a watch.
Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?

Some people are like slinkies: not good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one falls down the stairs.

What the fuck was this movie?! It was so weird and random and over-the-top at times.

But I mean that as a huge compliment since it was pretty damn amazing. O_O This takes the whole 'snuff film' aspect of Horror and does something really intelligent and interesting that still holds up well (an updated version could be pretty cool if it adds the internet and viral snuff videos and things into the mix but if it's ever remade it MUST be in capable hands because it's very easy to fuck something like this up BIGTIME). I loved the idea of these death 'shows' being used to manipulate and control the population. Even more than that, I love how this pointed the finger at people who MAKE these videos, the government, the viewers who get off on it as well as the viewers who are simply curious, and the sheeplike tendencies of many consumers. It's pretty well thought out stuff and I applaud that it didn't really seem to 'take sides' at all when it came to consumerism and the other things it tackled - except it took the side of the lead (duh) while NOT asking us to really do the same.

If you see Max as just a crazy person the whole time, that's fine. If you see him as a victim being controlled, that's fine. If you see him as someone trying to rebel and break away from the 'controllers', that's fine too. I honestly don't know what to think of him and I'm sure many would disagree but I definitely think that the Videodrome was 'real' and not

It's some pretty discomforting stuff either way though.

I loved the score and like Vanessa pointed out, many of the effects (the stretching TV for example<3) still look fantastic now. Some parts also made me cringe and even the gore shots (mostly

but there are other nasty bits too) were better than those found in many other 80s films. I do wish they had explained it a bit more but at the same time I'm glad that it was so weird and that the makers seemed more concerned with showing us all the craziness instead of trying to explain it all away. I don't know. I'm weird. (lol)

Definitely give this a watch<3 I feel bad for waiting SO long to finally get to it. X_X

7/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment.

I can't say I particularly like this movie -- I don't hate it by any means and there's plenty of stuff for horror fans on hand -- but there's a wierdness about it that prevents me from fully investing in it. I can say without hesitation that Cronenberg is a full-on filmmaking genius, and that in this film in particular he displays a very discomforting foresight, particularly in regards to how he was able to determine some twenty years ahead of time that eventually you would be able to pipe live murder directly into your home (via the internet, as it turned out) and his visuals are typically grotesque and evocative. But there's no one especially likeable here, no character whose side you're on 100%, no light upon which to contrast the dark. James Wood is good as usual but he's playing a sleaze bag, and though he quickly finds himself in over his head, he remains a sleaze bag throughout. Maybe if he'd had a more complete character arc I would have liked it more, I don't know...

Bizarre 80's flick, Woods isn't bad in it and Rick Baker's
Make-up effects are great as usual.
