![]() A woman named Grace retires with her two children to a mansion on Jersey, towards the end of the Second World War, where she's waiting for her husband to come back from battle. The children have a disease which means they cannot be touched by direct sunlight without being hurt in some way. They will live alone there with oppressive, strange and almost religious rules, until she needs to hire a group of servants for them. Their arrival will accidentally begin to break the rules with unexpected consequences. |

![]() On the secluded Isle of Jersey in the final days of World War II, a young woman waits in vain for her beloved husband to return from the front. Grace has been raising her two young children alone in her beautiful, cavernous Victorian mansion, the one place she believes them to be safe. But they are not safe. Not anymore. When a new trio of servants arrives to replace the crew that inexplicably disappeared, startling events begin to unfold. Grace's daughter reveals she has been communicating with unexplained apparitions that come and go in every room of the house. At first, Grace refuses to believe in her children's scary sightings, but soon, she too begins to sense that intruders are at large. Who are these numinous trespassers? And what do they want from Grace's family? In order to discover the truth, Grace must abandon all of her fears and beliefs and enter the otherworldly heart of the supernatural. |

I just picked up the two disc edition of this a couple of weeks ago, obnoxiously thick casing and all. It's been like ten years since I've seen it but I remember liking it. Unfortunately, the only thing I remember is the ending so I know I won't be surprised again. Oh well, I'll probably be rewatching it in several days and posting my thoughts. |

This movie really surprised me. Setting up the characters and their strange way of life was done so well, I genuinely wasn't expecting the ending. I had one of those "ohmygodwhathefuckjusthappenedthere" moments. Definitely need to see it again, as I haven't seen it since it came out. |

A fantastic film. Highly recommended. I saw it in the theater, and loved it. It's often forgotten, but I think it's one of the best "ghost movies" of the last 20 years. Just brilliant. J.N. |

The final twist was brilliant! The whole film was great. Nicole Kidman shines here |

I really enjoy this movie. I like Nicole Kidman a lot, and she's very well cast. The twist worked perfectly. I am still a bit displeased that this is one of the films that TCM is showing in October, because it gets in the way of getting my old movie fix. |

I gave this a rewatch, and it's only fair to give this a review that isn't an excuse to complain about TCM's schedule. I do really love this movie. It's a great update on the classic haunted house films. Nicole Kidman is perfect in this movie. She does a great job showing how frightened her character is supposed to be. A lot of the movie is just her running around being afraid, but she really carries the film. The kids were great and really well written. They could be a bit annoying, but it's in the regular way that kids actually are annoying. The atmosphere is terrific. The modern cinematography effects mixed with the classic style is really effective. I also really like the historical touches. They actually added a lot to all aspects of the movie. |

This one turned out to be an absolutely banal drama rather than a horror film, which has a lot of problems. One of the biggest issues is that nothing at all happens in here, with being just so slow and plodding that the scares hardly happen. Since nearly all the early scares or confrontations are off-camera with us coming upon their reactions or hearing about what happened, leaving this one to completely gloss over the potential main selling point by not showing anything to be afraid of and only telling us. This is compounded by all the times she keeps spouting off about their fates in Purgatory and such for failing to listen to her, her insistence on teaching and interpreting the Bible and all of the religious nonsense that permeates the film, as well as the rather ridiculous plot-point about the father coming home, which is dismissed quite suddenly and eats up several minutes of screen time going nowhere at all. Beyond the plot problems, the last act twist is just utterly confusing and makes no sense, rendering much of the film up until that point quite contradictory to what's been established and doesn't really serve a point at all. All of these issues aren't enough to save it from some rather nice points here, mainly a fine, suitably creepy Gothic mansion that serves as the perfect point for this effort, there's some generally freaky moments with the children's reactions to different events around the house and then there's the first revelation about the different workers' true past which prompts some fine action scenes for the first time and gets some chilling scenes involved. These make it worthwhile, but it's overall quite flawed. |

Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup? Some people are like slinkies: not good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one falls down the stairs. My review blog: http://donshorrormovieblog.blogspot.com/ | |

I recently rewatched this and I think the set up is far better than the pay off, but I may be in the minority in that. I remember this movie being really loved and I was just okay about it. |

Yeah, this one was always one of my favorites. It had a lot of creepy haunting moments. I didn't see it coming the first time I watched it. The end is so well done and messes with your head. I'd give it 8 photo albums out of 10. |
