The People Under the Stairs is the story of a young boy (Fool) from the ghetto and takes place on his 13th birthday. In an attempted burglary (along with two others) of the home of his family's evil landlords, he becomes trapped inside their large suburban house and discovers the secret of the "children" that the insane brother and sister have been "rearing" under the stairs.

It is fucking sweet! It's a nice little action/horror gem. Although the poster doesn't do shit for the plot of the movie, at least not in my humble opinion... 9/10. I need to buy this the next time I see it.

I've always thought this was one of Wes' most underrated movies. I mean, it's not alongside his strongest classics, but it is a strong movie. I don't watch it often, but when I do, I am always reminded of what a good movie it is and that I SHOULD watch it more often. The two characters named only 'Man' and 'woman'? Quite the creations there!

Agreed . . . I think it's one of his best. Far from perfect, but still one hell of an underrated movie.

I too loved the "Man" and "Woman" characters. I loved how they were mysterious and creepy, but also had some comedic moments.

I always found this to be overrated. The acting was poor and I just found the whole film to be mediocre. Some creepy scenes were well executed but it's one of Wes' films that I do not care for. 4/10

I've got it on my list on Netflix. I started it yesterday, something came up and I went with Serpent and the Rainbow instead. Funny, cause I stuck with the director and that didn't have anything to do with it.

Not one of Wes Craven's best and not one of his worst. A mixed-bag really. For me at least. It's uneven, for sure. The horror elements could have been better. If I had to describe this to some young horror fan today I'd say it's the Motel Hell version of Don't Breathe. Assuming they know about Motel Hell. I will give this movie points for its social commentary, but I feel as if that too is mishandled and heavy-handed at times. The biggest qualm I have with the flick is that there seems to be the constant use of a deus ex machina throughout. Oh, well. I do love Everett McGill and the woman who played alongside him, as well as everyone else, but there's something missing from this one. More horror, IMO. I love the house that's used for the setting though. Very cinematic; very Gothic. Would look great in B&W. I don't know if the ending works for me exactly. I will rewatch this. Trust me. It's worth another look ^_^

Im watching this tonight and I have to say this film is a great little horror film...Ive seen it many times and its a joy to see it again....I love the Man and Woman of the house....they really creepy...especiallly the way the Man runs around the house dressed up as a "Gymp"...chasing "Fool"...and I love "Roach" ....the way his tongue has been cut out is pretty gross!...this is a classic horror movie by Wes Craven!

Or, as my brain-dead cousin used to call it, "The People That Live Underneath of The Stairs."

Watched it last night for the October Challenge, and I really liked it. I remember seeing bits and pieces of it on tv when I was little, but I never actually sat through the whole thing, and now I'm glad I did. The 'parents' (especially the mother) were extremely creepy (and comical at times), and I really liked 'Fool', which is surprising since I usually don't care for little kid leads in horror movies.

Wtf @ the bondage outfit (lol)
