I do wonder what version of the movie we'll be seeing, because I remember reading a review from someone that saw both of them that said they were totally different. |

This was disappointingly boring and generic. They could have done something unique with the plot, but they stuck to the typical plot points and scares. It is like they were trying as hard as possible to avoid doing anything out of the ordinary. They don't even take advantage of the setting. If a new rumor started that the delay is from them reshooting 90% of it in Los Angeles, there wouldn't be much of anything on screen to disprove it. The direction is good, but it isn't anything particularly noteworthy. I'm not that keen on the acting, but it varies a lot throughout the movie. It gets a bit worse in the portions in English. It's a meh paranormal movie, but it had the potential to be more. |

^ I agree with you completely. But I still thought it was pretty enjoyable (though I doubt I'll watch it again). I mainly liked that it wasn't a Grudge-esque thing where a bunch of Americans visited another country or moved to another country only to be caught up in something they don't quite understand. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that but I don't think it would've fit this film. When it came to the scares, the look, and the overall tone, I felt like I was watching something made in 2006 or so, not this decade. It kind of reminded me of 7500 when it came to that, but 7500 was more entertaining and likeable than this. The characters here were pretty decent. I didn't mind the main couple (I actually felt pretty bad for them at times), the neighbor woman was pretty evil and absolutely stunning, the dad was funny (especially when he was trying to be a badass), the sister was boring, the desk guy wasn't a very Spoiler: click to toggle and the mom was actually pretty creepy at times. The effects here aren't good but they're not too bad either. I really loved the main location and the use of fog but I wish that we had gotten more scenes elsewhere. It really does seem like it could have been filmed almost anywhere with a building like this. The story was okay I guess but it wasn't fleshed out enough. There were a few pointless characters here and there and the ending mostly sucked.Slightly below average but nothing terrible. 5.5/10 quality, 6/10 entertainment. |
