Trailer
When country boy Caleb (Adrian Pasdar) claps eyes on elfin beauty Mae (Jenny Wright) outside an eerie filling station, he instantly falls under her mesmerising spell. The pair take off into the night together but it soon becomes apparent to Caleb that there is something quite peculiar about his passenger, especially when she attempts to sink her teeth into his neck.

As the sun begins to rise, Mae runs for cover leaving Caleb staggering through the desert with plumes of smoke bellowing from his every pore. Moments from incineration, a blacked out Winnebago sweeps by and the occupants drag Caleb’s smouldering carcass from the desert floor. Inside he comes face to face with Mae’s dysfunctional family (think The Simpson’s but with sharp teeth), a band of nomads with an aversion to sunlight and an unhealthy lust for blood. As the posse of the outsider’s journey across the mid-west of America leaving a trail of destruction in their wake, Caleb is inducted into a way of life where killing is the only means of survival.

Couldve sworn this already had a thread. :P

Pretty great film from what I remember. Very atmospheric with a few surprises here and there. I'm happy to say that I bought the special edition a few weeks ago. I still need to give it a rewatch and go through all of the features though.

We don't. I didn't see a thread.
Insane the search feature doesn't work in ALL zeta boards. So you have to end up looking through pages yourself. But I did and don't see one.

This is a vamp film? It sounds like a great one.

Ah I didn't know that, thanks for the tip! ;-)

Yes it's a vampire movie but not a vampire movie you would expect

Yep, the "V word" is never uttered once in NEAR DARK.

Such a cool, original film. Almost a "vampire western", in a way. Love it . . . .

Amazing movie. It came out the same year as the Lost Boys which kind of overshadowed this gem. Great story and feel to it... I love Bill Paxton as Severen, so many great lines and personality. He's my favorite character in this... With Lance Hendrickson as Jessie coming in at a close 2nd. ;)

I enjoyed this film very much, agreed I thought Bill Paxton was the best character in the film and I didn't find it like typical vamp flicks

Watched this for the second time a couple nights ago and I actually liked it more than I did the first time. For some reason, I remembered this as being satisfying but really slow but I guess the pacing got to me more when I first saw it because I was only like...15 at the time? I don't know. It didn't really bother me this time, though the first twenty minutes or so still failed to impress me. A lot of the 'date night' stuff at the beginning was pretty lame. (wary)

The group of vampires = awesome. They're still some of my favorite vampires I've seen. Severen was an evil fuck and Bill Paxton was really hot in this. I loved that he was so sadistic when it came to his victims and how he actually seemed pretty jealous of Caleb. Jesse was great as well. I love Lance Henriksen and this is probably one of my favorite performances/characters of his. Diamondback was really likeable too but I wish that she had gotten a bit more to do, especially when it comes to killing people and being all badass. But maybe I was just pampered by Jenette being badass Vasquez in Aliens. (lol) Mae was totally adorable and was similar to the girl in Let The Right On In/Let Me In in that she just had a tragic feel about her and while totally used to killing people and being a vampire, she didn't seem to ENJOY it all that much (but she didn't mope about it either). The only vampire I didn't care for was Homer. He had a few funny moments and some good lines but overall, he didn't stick with me as much as the rest of them and his obsession with Caleb's sister was really weird and came out of nowhere. Caleb was a pretty good lead. He's not the sort of character that we haven't seen many other times but his actor made it work and he was really likeable.

The deaths aren't the bloodiest I've seen but a few scenes - the terrific bar scene (my favorite part) in particular - deliver the goods when it comes to gore. The ending on the road was pretty sad. I didn't want

The very end was sort of a cop-out as well, like they felt that they had to

It works though, I guess, since this isn't the sort of vampire movie that played by ALL of the rules of the subgenre.

Overall, this is pretty great and while it's obvious that it's not a 'new movie', it holds up VERY well<3. I can't wait to dive into all the special features. I've been neglecting my two disc DVD for too long.

6.5/10 quality, 7/10 entertainment.

I watched this tonight and thought it was a decent flick. It was definitely different for a vamp movie.

Good flick. Unlike a lot of '80s horror it's very low-key and drab, but those things work in its favor; it makes the moments where something does happen hit you that much harder. The rural setting, the cinematography, the score -- everything evokes a very particular rural feel, like it's set in a place where time doesn't exist, an almost fairie tale-like vibe.

I agree with most who say Paxton is a highlight; he definitely steals every scene he's in ("I got a new name for you -- Mr. Pig-knuckle!"). Speaking of which, every good horror film needs "that scene," a moment or sequence that makes it stand out from the pack, makes it easily memorable, makes you able to refer to it as "the one where..." For Near Dark, it's the bar scene. I like how it lingers between kills instead of leap-frogging from one to the next. It lets you see how the vamp gang is completely indifferent about human life, and gives you glimpses into each of their personalities as characters, not just monsters who drink blood.

Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (who would go on to become the first female to win a best director Oscar, for "The Hurt Locker") and co-written by Erid Red, who for a while there in the 80s and 90s seemed determined to deliver a horror film based on every classic Universal monster. Near Dark is his vampire flick; Body Parts is a combination of Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde; Bad Moon is his werewolf; and The Hitcher is his "the monster from beyond."

All he needed was an Invisible Man and he'd had covered all his bases.

Big fan of this movie, it's been a bit of grower for me. The first time viewing,,I wasn't that impressed but with each subsequent viewing I've something more to enjoy. Stellar casting,,directing and story. Probably my second favourite vampire flick from the 80's.

Such a great mixture of Horror and Western.

Kathryn Bigelow is a really good director.

The mood. The setting. The ensemble. Great all across the board.

The music is so good too.

As mentioned, Bill Paxton does steal every scene he's in, but Lance Henricksen is just so commanding in his role it's hard to forget about him as well.

The man who played Caleb's father is good too.

Everyone does a fine job, I must say.

The bar scene and the finale are definitely the highlights. As well as the motel shoot-out.

I love how Caleb's father is a vet and how

I'd be remiss if I didn't call Near Dark a classic.
