In 1936, the Wollners--a German family living in rural Town Creek, Maryland--are contacted by the Third Reich to host a visiting scholar, Professor Ricard Wirth. In need of money, they accept Wirth into their home. Wirth's grand occult project seals the Wollners off from the rest of the world and makes them players in a horrifying game of survival. Now, in 2007, Evan Marshall's life has stalled at 25 years old. Left without answers after his older brother Victor's disappearance from a camping trip near Town Creek, he has tried to move on. But when Victor returns one night, very much alive and having escaped his captors, Evan asks no questions. At his brother's request, he loads their rifles, packs up their boat and follows Victor back to Town Creek on a mission of revenge that will test them in every possible way.

This one was a really entertaining effort, though still somewhat flawed effort.

One of the biggest parts to this one is the fact that there's quite a lot of solid action scenes within this one that generates quite a frantic pace that keeps things going along. Their first raid on the house, appearing from the river into a surprise ambush with a fine firefight with the family and manage to overrun the farm which gives them the upper hand during the battle and serves as a strong launching pad for the rest of the film.

Featuring a great story that introduces a nice mixture of occult, black magic and the supernatural, and a rather insane streak that constantly keeps things off-guard by generating a lot of great action scenes mainly in the barn which features a lot of really innovative moments from the numerous scenes of the reanimated animals going berserk and attacking everyone in the kitchen, this is rather enjoyable overall. Introducing the later fun of the reanimated family members and letting them get bundled together with the continuous mentions of his occult studies and need for the black magic within here, there's some rather nice scenes to be had here which really plays a strong part getting a strong sense of action for this one.

Likewise, the finale really sets that in motion with a rather enjoyable concept for finally finishing him off and yet also allowing for plenty of generally enjoyable action scenes with some nice chasing and some fruition of the black magic which makes for a really enjoyable time. Throw in some gore and it's even better, as this one is pretty bloody at times since the reanimation factor gives this one a chance to allow for multiple reasons to kill off the same figure and really scores nicely in aiding the fun to be had from this one.

These issues here make this quite enjoyable though not without some flaws, which is mainly in that the main villain doesn't really do a lot to inspire fear beyond ripping off his face numerous times. This is entirely problematic as there's something wrong with a film that doesn't have an oppressive main villain like this one as that seems to be his main trick here, his lack of logic doesn't stay consistent from scene-to-scene and a few unexplored areas are left unanswered as for why he managed to accomplished his tasks completely unnoticed all these years or the fact that nobody went searching for his prisoners which really leaves a lot of that part of the film to seem like a rushed, completely inconsequential series of explanations that make no sense.

Still, this one was a lot of fun.

Some people are like slinkies: not good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one falls down the stairs.
