In my opinion, the Saw series has had a solid series of sequels (I rank them 2, 5, 4, 3, 6, and 7.) The storytelling, characters, and twists were always done top notch, even though the later films turned more torture porn. And the Friday the Thirteenth series has had a good amount of entertaining sequels, same with Halloween and Scream. So what do you guys think? |

Friday The 13th (gotta love 2, 3, 4, and 6 especially) Halloween (2 and 4 and the last act of H20 especially) Romero's zombie series (Dawn, Day, and Land were all great) Final Destination (2 and 5 are awesome, 3 is good but flawed) Saw (2, 3, and 6 are my favorites of the series) A Nightmare On Elm Street (3, 4, and New Nightmare) |

Friday the 13th. The original is good fun, most of the sequels are even better. Phantasm. I love the original, and the first two sequels are immensely fun. 4 has it's moments and stands up well enough but not enough for the others. Child's Play. I've always loved this series, there's not a bad one amongst the bunch and there's something for everyone throughout the series. Quite possibly the most consistent franchise in the genre. Halloween. The original is vastly overrated, the true sequels are for the most part better and more slash-happy which makes them great fun. Final Destination. While the gimmicky nature of part 1 has started to wear thin in terms of setting up believable scenarios for the films, once that's out of mind these are quite fun. Hellraiser. Ignoring part 5, there's a lot of good stuff to like as this wore on. A few key scenes are hit-or-miss but on the whole this is an unjustly maligned franchise. Candyman. Again, unjustly maligned franchise that tends to treat the original like a holy grail and then cast off the sequels when there's some good stuff to be found within. Leprechaun. So the jokes get a little thin and there's a lot more cheese to be found in the later efforts, that's still quite a hefty amount of quality fun to be found here. |

A Nightmare on Elm Street: I can honestly say that, aside from the remake, I like every single one of these movies. I can appreciate the franchise as a whole. Sometimes stuff doesn't make sense and sometimes it got ridiculous, but Robert was always entertaining (and scary still at times) and the deaths just continued to get more imaginative and interesting. Plus Nightmare 1 and New Nightmare are legitimately horrifying films. Final Destination: Similar to Nightmare on Elm Street in that I can enjoy all of the sequels as long as they keep the imagination going. The more complex the death scenes, the better. I also quite like when the series shows a dark-humor about itself. Child's Play: I haven't seen Seed or Curse yet, but I absolutely love watching these for a laugh. I don't find them at all scary or even creepy. They're just a good fun romp. Bride seemed to understand the silliness about the entire franchise, which made that even more fun to watch that the previous sequels. Hell, even the first. Re-Animator: Sequels aren't great, but I'll take any excuse to see Jeffrey Combs play Herbert West again and again. Hellraiser: I'm sort of iffy on certain sequels, but this is another franchise where I dig the visuals, the lead horror icon's performance, and really this is one where the building of the mythology is something I'm into. I reaaaaaaally like Hellraiser 4 and the whole toy-maker dynamic they create with that. Phantasm: I think that first one is one of the great horror films, and I love watching Coscarelli expand on this series. It's so bizarre and uneven, but in a good way, a nightmarish kind of way. I'm sad to see that he chose not to direct the 5th and final film. Evil Dead: How could Evil Dead NOT be on this list? Though the sequels were more comedic than scary, I can't help but call this one of the best horror franchises of all time. Alien: I can say something good about every sequel. Even the much maligned Alien3 and Alien Resurrection I can look at and go "Hey, there's something to enjoy here". Hell, even Prometheus at some level that I can appreciate for having some effective scenes and great visuals. Edited by SutterCane, Nov 25 2014, 10:04 PM.

Definitely The Evil Dead series, movie-wise. As much as I complain about the remake, it's not that awful. I especially want to see the unrated version of that one. What else? Hmm . . . Freddy Krueger is my favorite slasher icon, but 2, 5, 6, FvJ, and the remake weren't exactly great movies. So, I only really like 3, 4, and New Nightmare, of the sequels. Then again FvJ is decent enough for a Jason flick. Which brings me to . . . Friday the 13th has quite a lot going for it, sequel-wise, thanks to Jason. The best being 2, 4, 6, and 7. 3's okay; definite points for bringing about the hockey mask. 5 is interesting and adds to Tommy's storyline really well, I just find a lot of faults with it. JGtH is also interesting, just poorly executed. Jason X is dumb fun. Don't get me started on Manhattan though. Halloween has a lot going for it too here. 2 isn't as great and can be over-the-top compared to the first one, but it's a good follow-up to the night HE came home. 3 works better as a stand alone rather than a sequel, but I definitely love 3. 4 is great. 5 fucks up what should have been a slam dunk. 6 isn't great, but it's solid considering all the backstage drama with rewrites and what not. H20 is a touch overrated, but it's a good Laurie Strode entry. Resurrection never happened. If they can retcon I can too. Rob Zombie's movies weren't bad at all, although I prefer his second one over his first take on the Myers mythology. So, there's that. Child's Play, as of late, has been pretty good about getting back on track. Alien is touch and go, but always worth checking out. Aside from its versus movies. Hatchet has really impressed me having only recently checked the whole series out this past year. Romero's Dead series is pretty solid, as far as the first three, maybe even four, sequels go. The [REC] series is good too, despite some mistakes in how 3 was presented. Hypercube isn't as bad as people say it is, and Zero has some nasty traps, so, maybe the Cube series as well. However, I think just barely. If at all. Scream really only has one great sequel, 2. Although, I always get the urge to watch 3 whenever I think about the series. 4 too, I suppose. The completist in me. I would also like to say I'm a big fan of the old Universal Frankenstein movies. Those sequels range from great to good to bad, but mostly good. Texas Chainsaw has too many timelines and restarts for me to even consider it, as much as I love 3. Next Generation is such an odd movie that, any more, I'm fascinated by it. 2 is . . . Yeah. Not my cup of tea. The remake isn't bad, and The Beginning isn't that bad either, it just suffers from being a prequel, in my book. 3D sucks. Leatherface is okay, at best. |
