"Warner Bros. Pictures has slated their found-footage Into The Storm for an August 8, 2014 release.

Final Destination 5‘s Steven Quale directed the flick about a group of high school students document the events and aftermath of a devastating tornado.

Richard Armitage, Sarah Wayne Callies, Jeremy Sumpter all star.

Quale is an effects guru who worked with James Cameron. I thought FD 5 was pretty great, which makes me insanely excited to see what he can do with a modern day Tornado."

Meh. The disaster film genre as a whole is something that needs to be done either exceptionally well or not at all these days. Frankly, I saw a trailer before seeing a film recently (don't even remember which one it was, actually) and my brother and I thought it looked pretty dull (and he's not one to bitch about films like I am). After Gravity managed to do something pretty original and special with the disaster film genre last year, I find nothing that really stands out to sell me on this film so unless I can torrent it and watch it like that I highly doubt I'll be seeing it.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/into_the_storm_2014/

It also has a lower audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes than the new TMNT movie, which people have basically hailed as the second coming of Hitler. And only slightly higher audience rating on Metacritic. So yeah, not just the critics being "meh" on this film.

I'll reserve my own judgement on the film until I see it, but unless I either pirate it or end up watching it in a stream, or whatever, my interest on it is really limited and I just can't be arsed to spend money on it.

^ and that, friends, is why many movies under perform. I never pirate films and I'd certainly hope that, as an aspiring filmmaker, no one would do the same with my works.

And not every film has to be totally unique. That, and trusting the opinions of mainstream audiences who make silly comparisons and think that Freddy Vs Jason was the first Friday The 13th film....tis foolish imo. (wary)

Saw this yesterday and yeah, the critics and mainstream audiences were....wrong as always. Tsk.
This started off with a pretty jolting scene involving four high schoolers hanging out in a car late at night only to encounter...need I even continue? In an almost slasher film way, it goes from that quick scene to a group of storm chasers, a trio of high school students (as well as some painfully underused other students), the father of two of the boys, the principal who handles the situation in the wrong way possible and a redneck duo who are trying to film the tornado for their YouTube channel (and believe it or not such things DO happen). A few of the characters are VERY likeable and sympathetic with the worst/annoying ones dying before the halfway mark or getting limited screen time throughout. There's one scene in particular that felt all too familiar to me and actually made me feel a bit unsettled in an "oh shit, I've been there" way (though my tornado experiences weren't anywhere near as extreme as most in this film).
Another scene involving two characters who are near death and others trying to save them before time runs out was surprisingly effective and anyone who says that the 'goodbye footage' was unrealistic clearly hasn't heard of Hurricane Katrina, the cap sizing of that ferry boat this year or other disasters that placed people in that situation.
One death was pretty shocking. I so wouldn't want to die that way. Hell no. No no no no no. The last death was also an "i would shit my pants and shut down completely" moment.
The tornados themselves were pretty damn scary and the effects here were excellent. Some parts of the film involving the characters got a bit corny but hey, they were good for showing that something like this could change someone's outlook on life. Surviving a big disaster has the potential to make people appreciate what they still have.

I wish it'd been longer though and that we had gotten a few more characters who lived in the town. There were a few underused characters who never even got involved but I guess that's fine since they weren't all that great anyway.

Still, this was AWESOME lol. Not sure if id call it a horror film but some parts were pretty jolting and others were structured like something from one. Not my favorite film of the year but definitely deserves more attention and praise.

7/10 quality. 8.5/10 entertainment.

...so your sister is one of those people.

I take it she's not a horror fan at all then since she listens to bad reviews? (coffee)

if we were to always listen to negative reviews, the genre would've died by 1984.

But anyway; it's made $68,601,000
