Welcome to Under The Morgue.

We have sections for each decade of film, from the 1910s onward, as well as sections for 10+ major franchises, close to 50 'smaller' franchises (containing five entries or less), creative writing, independent filmmaking, photography, music, Non-Horror films and TV shows, forum games, and boredom busters, and to top it all off there's an IM shoutbox at the bottom of the page for random chat. From the tame and 'kid sister friendly' to the psychological and mindbending to cheesy splatter flicks to hardcore torture-oriented horror, there's something here for everyone, so why not dive in?

What are some of the WORST Practical Effects setpieces you've seen in Horror films?

The effects in Hatchet 2 was less than stellar. Return To Sleepaway had DREADFUL CGI.

While it's not a big effect, I'm not fond of the jaundiced look of the Black Christmas '06 killers at all.

Blue zombies from Dawn of the dead, great movie and a classic for sure but I thought the blue zombies were a little cheesy

I really didn't like the makeup in The Grudge 3.

Yep- Kathy Bates' fake deadhead in Misery.

The tarantula scene in Fulci's The Beyond.

Anything CGI.

Anything with blood that looks like soupy melted crayon, so, Bava's Bay of Blood is a big contender there. All the deaths. And a lot of 70's vampire films suffered from this.

Nightmare City, all the face makeup on the zombies.

I think we're seeing a trend here- pretty much anything Italian.

Anything CGI.

Prometheus and Dawn Of The Dead (2004) and quite a few other films would disagree. Some CGI is pretty good.

There's no reason to watch either of those films. George Romero's Dawn of the Dead is a masterpiece and can't be adapted to any later time period. Socially, culturally, politically- it doesn't translate to the W. Bush aughts.

Can we focus on CGI not being a practical effect? There's other threads for talking about CGI.

I don't want to single it out since it was so ambitious, but the ending of Saw had some rough effects.

Some of the effects in the original ANOES -- the long arms scraping along the fence or whatever, the rope scene set at the jail, and the mom being pulled through the door at the end. I would also say probably the marshmallow staircase scene. As much as I love that scene you can tell where Heather Langenkamp's marks are for her to hit.

Troll 2 has some pretty bad practical effects

Slime City does too throughout

Troma movies, obviously, but endearingly so

The zombie that gets killed by the helicopter blade in the original Dawn of the Dead is bad for having an obvious fake forehead.

I want to say Basket Case has some bad effects, but I do enjoy that movie in spite of its faults.
