Top cover girl and fashion model, Jennifer Tree has it all--beauty, fame, money and power. Her face appears on covers of hundreds of magazines. At the top of her game, Jennifer is America's sweetheart. She is loved and adored and sought after. Everyone wants her. But someone out there has been watching and waiting. Someone wants her in the worst way. Out alone at a charity event in Soho, Jennifer is drugged and taken. Held captive in a cell, Jennifer is subjected to a series of terrifying, life-threatening tortures that could only be conceived by a twisted, sadistic mind.

I rented this once when I was 15/6. I remember thinking it was okay. I didn't like the ending, but it was an okay way to waste a bit of time on a Saturday afternoon. (Oh, bliss. The days when I didn't work weekends or have any real responsibilities except for math homework. Don't ya just miss 'em?)

Elisha Cuthbert was medium-good.

I remember hearing terrible things about one. Aside from the original ad campaign being pretty tasteless (they wound up changing it quick), pretty much every review I read called it garbage. I think it was the beginning of the end for the torture porn genre, because I don't recall many movies in the genre afterwards (outside of Saw sequels and The Collector) getting theatrical releases.

While there's some good stuff to this one, the fact that there's a lot more flaws really makes this one quite low. One of the biggest ones is that there's really no rationale offered for why anything goes on in here. It's supposed to go without saying that the cause is due to feeling incredibly attracted to her, but that still doesn't explain certain motivations present. The blank, expressionless and completely unknown killer here doesn’t strike any kind of fear about himself physically, which is why offering a sort of explanation would’ve gone a long-way towards what the purpose of doing this would’ve been. One of the biggest culprits is the ending, which is where it's supposed to all come together, yet instead it just doesn't hold any impact at all. It glosses over the answer and doesn't provide any real truth to the matter, and instead it just makes the whole film feel incredibly confused due to not giving anything of any real definitive clarity, especially with why he held both of them together. Another problem in the film is the fact that there's way too much time spent on making sure the characters are drugged, which gets old after a while. It doesn't make for very engaging viewing knowing that, immediately afterward, she's going to be drugged out to ensure that the cycle continues. Rather, do it rarely or make it a mystery as to what's occurring to her, as she keeps blanking out but is unsure of why, building up mystery to what's happening there rather than spell it out from the very beginning and not offering any chance of doing so otherwise. The last flaw to this one is the fact that, through the majority of the film, hardly anything really interesting happens. Sure, the tortures are fine and graphic, but it just runs through the motions without anything there to make them standout nor does anything interesting with the shots of her candid interviews, and it suffers for that. Along with some lame tortures and the unthreatening killer, these here are the film's problems. There was a few things about this one that actually worked. One of the biggest is that there's a really spectacular setting in here where all the action takes place, with the different amount of really dangerous-looking devices strung up throughout the walls, the dirty, grimy feel with all the dried blood and damp-looking surroundings. This effectively gives off the feeling of being a rather creepy-looking setting and appropriate for a series of crazy tortures to happen. There's a really good one inside an hourglass that is incredibly suspenseful, a falling acid trap and the different encounters down in the basement are quite nice, as is a full-on extended chase at the end that is incredibly fun and makes for a lot of good stuff. From the different entanglements through the house to the fun finale down in the basement and even the bloodshed, this scene has a lot to like going for it and it's the best thing about the film. These here are what hold this up but the flaws are just too much for this one.
Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?

Some people are like slinkies: not good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one falls down the stairs.

This film totally came out only to cash in on the torture porn popularity of the mid-late 2000s. It had that sweet love story angle and all, too, but it was something totally wasted. The film played so many things safe, so many things cliche.

I still want to know what was apparently so offensive about its marketing, though...

^^Quoted verbatim from IMDb:

The initial advertising campaign for Captivity featured a multi-paneled poster. The first panel was labeled "Abduction," featuring actress Elisha Cuthbert appearing petrified, her mouth covered by a black gloved hand. The second panel was labeled "Confinement" and showed Cuthbert behind a chain-link fence with a bloody thumb poking through. The third was labeled "Torture" and featured Cuthbert on her back, her face hidden within a white cast and red tubes going up her nose. The fourth panel was labeled "Termination" and featured what appeared to be a limp body hanging over a table. The poster was placed on several billboards across Los Angeles, causing a significant uproar and resulting in many complaints. Distributor Lionsgate - who were not involved in the film's advertising campaign and claimed to know nothing of the poster in question before the posters were distributed - and producer After Dark Films ultimately decided to remove the controversial poster from the advertising campaign and took the billboards down.

Well, I mean, I don't find it THAT crazy. It sounds like a pretty awesome campaign poster...

BUT. The film isn't all that good or all that disturbing, so I don't think it matches. It's too cool of an idea for this movie. :P

I like Daniel Gillies, but yeah. Don't hear good things. And the little I've seen is less appealing than what I've heard

Puppy, just because there's no evidence she killed her aunt doesn't make her dating material.

I just watched this for the October Challenge, and Don's assessment is correct: this movie has a few redeeming qualities that keep it out of the same hell occupied by The Gallows, Texas Chainsaw 3D, and The Haunting of Molly Hartley, particularly in terms of production values (it's well-shot, the actors didn't embarrass themselves), but saying it's better than those movies is damning it with faint praise. Character development is negligible at best, on the part of both the heroine and her captor. The only plot comes through random character actions that feel as though they're meant to just move the film along rather than make any sense. It pulls its punches whenever it comes time to put the heroine in real danger. It leaves opportunities for any sort of depth or meaning lying on the table. It may as well be a direct-to-video cheapie if not for the talent involved. If only this film had been a tenth as daring as the billboards for it were, which are probably the only reason anybody remembers it nowadays.
