New horror That I've been following since its early days of pre-production and recently had its premier at the sundance film festival. Redband trailer was recently released and it did not disappoint. This film looks insane and is sure to satisfy any sick & twisted gorehound.
Produced by XYZ films which is part owned by Gareth Evans (writer/director of the raid, raid 2: berandal) and written and directed by the mo brothers who also helmed the twisted but brilliant Indonesian horror "macabre".
Check out the redband trailer below and give me some of your beautiful thoughts.

I'm looking forward to maybe watching this next week. I planned on treating it like a 2015 release, so I've been saving it for when there isn't really anything good coming out.

This is very good. The characters are interesting and complicated. I love how the whole film is centered around comparing and contrasting these two characters. There are stylistic differences between their scenes that really bring out the themes of the movie. Both actors were also really great.

The only thing I don't love is that it feels really long. It isn't totally in a bad way. It's like they jammed an entire 6 episode television series into one movie. There's just something about the pace that I don't totally love.

I'm about forty five minutes into it and I'm already pretty much in love with it. (lol) So far, it's been moving VERY quickly. I thought it was only on for a half hour but nope - forty five minutes. Perhaps it slows down so the length (138 minutes) is more noticeable.

Like Dementia, Echoes, and The Falling (and soon Cub), I'm really kicking myself for not seeing this one BEFORE the 2015 Awards started. All of them are definitely worth being dropped in about a dozen categories each, at least.

I don't remember it feeling slow. It just felt like I had been watching it for a very long time, like I had been binge watching a television program instead of watching a movie. Like Netflix should have been asking me if I was still watching.

Oh! Yeah, I can definitely get feeling that way. I kind of felt like that too at one point.

I think the numerous long scenes are the cause of that. There's at least three or four scenes that went on for at least ten minutes each.

I was definitely not expecting this to be as nasty and meanspirited as it ended up being. I was also not expecting it to open with a sex scene followed by a scene that had me feeling genuinely uncomfortable, lol. Everything about the opening worked well. Nomura was really hot but was less attractive as the film went on. Perhaps I was subconsciously 'drawing away from' him as he became more 'blah' and vicious?

I liked the stuff with Mr Dharma. That whole story worked well and the film probably wouldn't have been as good without that bit of a 'revenge' storyline. If it had just been two guys killing random people, it would've still been good but I don't think it would've been as memorable or 'deep.' I do wish we had gotten a bit of courtroom drama and stuff though. (lol) The disposal of bodies using acid probably should've been more graphic but I suppose it didn't NEED to be.

The car-shooting scene was really impressive and was one of the more intense parts of the film. The interactions between Bayu and Nomura were all really good. The dialogue was mostly excellent and there were a few darkly funny bits scattered throughout. I like that while the violence could be a bit over-the-top at times, it was never TOO farfetched and they kept things just a little bit exaggerated. What the fuck was that on the TV 48 minutes in? Nightmare fuel.

"Where they say 'no', we say 'yes.'"

I wanted more scenes of Nomura walking Soichi through things. The 'grooming the kid to be a killer' aspect was really interesting but I don't like that they spent more time on Hisae's reaction to it than the bits themselves. Speaking of Hisae, I loved her. She was easily my favorite female character of the film (Midori was the most entertaining though). The killing of the one guy

was a bit sad but good performances are mostly to thank for that since the character was just kind of 'there.'

It was really cool seeing both killers become sloppy and spiral out of control at the same time (though Bayu was always a little bit sloppy, haha). Hisae's big scenes toward the end were intense as Hell and definitely contained some of my favorite parts of the movie. I was pretty shocked that

Once that happened, I thought for sure that

would end up surviving but nope. Once again, I was really surprised. The ending standoff was terrific and the outcome was perfectly fitting. I like that they made it so I felt conflicted about Dharma. He was a bit of a scumbag but I could totally understand why he was so upset -

It was REALLY sad seeing Bayu's daughter pretty much reject him like that. Blah. I love that

I'll definitely be watching this again<3. Definitely one of the better movies of the year imo.

7/10 quality, 8.5/10 entertainment.

This was a very insane movie. That's really all I can say about it. It's bloody damn insane.

Well-acted. Both actors did fabulous jobs. It's a very long film, 2 hours and 17 minutes. So prepare for that, even though most of the horror films that came out this past year were fairly short movies. The first two acts of the film play out as just a hyper-stylish, hyper-violent action drama flick, but the third act pretty much becomes a slasher film, and I love it.

Like I said, the actors all sell the shit out of their roles, especially the two leads, especially the actors who play Nomura and Bayu. Nomura has a very sexy quality about him that only Asian men can have, and I freaking LOVE it. I love the fact that the film employs so many different languages in it, including random bits in which the two killers speak English to each other, which is fairly strange and adds to the surreal, hyper-stylized tone and feel of the film.

This is a very brutal film. I loved it. I loved how stylish it was. How graphic. How totally stylish and cool. Very good filmmaking. I love the use of music, too. The techno music in the club scene was an awesome touch, and I LOVED it.

I don't want a sequel, though. That will likely ruin it.

7/10

I pretty much agree with everything Jonathan says about this movie, obviously.
