5 years after Pitch Black, the wanted criminal Riddick arrives on a planet called Helion Prime, and finds himself up against an invading empire called the Necromongers, an army that plans to convert or kill all humans in the universe.

Overall this one wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I generally prefer my sci-fi to be action movies set on other worlds or slightly-altered future societies of greater technology and not much else so something like this is quite different in it's full-on sci-fi mode. There's some rather enjoyable moments here that help with that including some fine one-on-one fist-fights, a couple of explosive shoot-outs and a harrowing chase through the rocky terrain to get to safety that's quite thrilling even if nothing of a traditional action scene is present in the scene. The assault on the planet is spectacular as well with all the buzzing ships, aerial dogfights and wanton destruction of the city that's quite fun and thankfully not too CGI-heavy to make for a bland sequence, and while the plot has a lot of scatterbrained ideas and logic, it's not so bad.

I think this works a lot better watching the Director's Cut at home than it did in theaters. Longer action sequences are nice, but it mostly helps that it's slowed down a bit. The theatrical version felt a bit like work, with the tightly filmed action sequences and characters that go missing.

Well I finally watched it with Robby and aside from some okay moments and good characters (I especially liked Riddick, Kira, Aeeron, and Dame Vaako) this really wasn't all that great. They overcomplicated things a bit to the point of me getting lost occasionally (maybe because we started it at 6am) and eventually I really stopped caring. The first 30 minutes and last 20 minutes were pretty solid but the middle hour was pretty meh. A lot of things were super choppy, many of the characters felt pointless and didn't have enough to do and they almost got TOO sci-fi with it. Compared to Pitch Black (which I see as Horror) and Riddick (which was a pretty good blend of Action and Horror) this really wasn't anything special and it almost feels out of place in between those two which are completely different films, in tone, look, pacing, and content. I'm just glad we saw the extended version since I really wouldn't like the theatrical (PG13, ew) cut.

6/10 quality and I'm not sure where to rate this on the 'entertainment scale' since it was so all over the place.

I think I was a little more favorable since I like my action more explosion-happy with lots of destruction so that made me feel a little more at home with it, but I do agree on the out-of-place in the series context of it all as you mentioned it perfectly. Pitch Black was a horror film (not that it was a good one, but it still comes closest there) while the follow-up Riddick is a straightforward Action/Horror mixture that works quite well. This mess of a plot to explain all the sci-fi elements is quite haphazard and doesn't really gel together all that well, so I do think it's the weakest of the series.

I'm nervous about the fourth film (if we get one) since the ending of Riddick made it seem like the next one will go a similar route as this one did with all the bigtime sci-fi weirdness. :P

I did really like SOME of the action sequences in this though but DAMN were some of those scenes choppy as hell.
