Opening with the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, members of the 2nd Ranger Battalion under Cpt. Miller fight ashore to secure a beachhead. Amidst the fighting, two brothers are killed in action. Earlier in New Guinea, a third brother is KIA. Their mother, Mrs. Ryan, is to receive all three of the grave telegrams on the same day. The United States Army Chief of Staff, George C. Marshall, is given an opportunity to alleviate some of her grief when he learns of a fourth brother, Private James Ryan, and decides to send out 8 men (Cpt. Miller and select members from 2nd Rangers) to find him and bring him back home to his mother...

Amazing movie. I was numb after it was over. The opening invasion scene is jaw dropping, but really needed to be seen in a theater with the sound system for the full effect.

It's very good. In the theater, the bullets were hitting and clanging and it sounded like they were whizzing by your head.

I love this movie. It's well put together and the battle scenes are epic. I love watching this over and over again. I cried my eyes out whenever one of the characters died. It's a very emotional movie. 10/10

Here's proof that Spielberg can make a really gritty, dark film despite his normally family friendly reputation. Still a bit hard to watch after all these years but I'd go so far as to call it a masterpiece.

This was an intense film to see in the theater. Easily the most intense I've ever experienced, anyway. What this user said was a big part of it. People were bawling and crying throughout the entire movie and when

Also, I realize that I categorize film differently than a lot of people do... both here and elsewhere, but...

This is not an action nor a thriller. While there is indeed plenty of action in it, that's not the point of this film. This is a drama.

Action films can have strong dramatic/emotional elements too, the same way Horror films can. For example, The Divide is a Horror film despite the fact that like 90% of it is about the mental/emotional stuff the characters go through and there are some pretty sad moments. This can stay in this section. Not all Action/Thrillers are just mindless popcorn flicks.

I couldn't care less if you put in the children's section, but it's not an action film.

Well IMDB (and every other site I've seen it mentioned on) see it as an Action/Drama/War film so...it stays. Genres cross over sometime, a movie isn't automatically a Drama for having heartfelt elements.

This is certainly debatable. It's mainly an action but also a drama so we can just leave it where the thread was put I guess. :P But I can understand why some would want it moved. It's kinda like Black Swan. Some consider it horror, thriller, or a drama but sometimes we just gotta choose one for the sake of it.

Getting back OT, getting the Blu-Ray soon hopefully. <3

Just like it's not automatically an action film because there is combat in it.

I will freely admit that I often tend to be the odd man out when it comes to categorization of film but I just don't see this one as an action flick. That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
