Narrative from the NUK June 2017
- June Elections
-
At the start of June, the New United Kingdom held its third general election, which saw the most competitive campaigns ever run in our region's history. The British Royalist candidates standing were Kasimir Devereaux, who had been elected to one previous term as a Conservative Progressive before defecting, Connor Devereaux-Mountbatten, who had won in an earlier by-election for the Northern Ireland seat, and Misael Mountbatten, for the first time diving into NUK politics. Standing for the Conservatives were three incumbents, these being Lucas Spencer-Wessex, a two-term Prime Minister and MP who leads the party, Charles Watson-Turing-Donald, the Home Secretary and two-term MP, and Cello Snow-Donald, the Attorney General and MP. The Independent shaking things up in the race was Crushita Stuart-Telcontar, an unorthodox politician originally from Wintreath who sought office on a platform of pivoting away from partisan politics. In the end, the British Royalists edged out the competition, resulting in a House of Commons consisting of 3 BRP, 1 CPP, and 1 Independent. However, things would soon get complicated.Final Tally of Votes:
Kasimir Devereaux (BRP) - 11 (12.4%) Misael Mountbatten (BRP) - 14 (15.7%) Connor Devereaux-Mountbatten (BRP) - 17 (19.1%) Crushita Stuart-Telcontar (Ind) - 17 (19.1%) Charles Watson-Turing-Donald (CPP) - 10 (11.2%) Cello Snow-Donald (CPP) - 9 (10.1%) Lucas Spencer-Wessex (CPP) - 11 (12.4%) | |

As stated in the Imperial Britannic Constitution that governs the New United Kingdom, Parliament must nominate a Prime Minister who is leader of either the majority party or majority coalition in the House of Commons. This clause led to some insane political maneuvering over the position of Prime Minister. Soon after the results were confirmed, it was announced that the Unity Coalition had been formed by Lucas Spencer-Wessex of the CPP, Crushita Stuart-Telcontar as an independent, and Connor Devereaux-Mountbatten. This meant that where before Kasimir Devereaux was the only option for Prime Minister as leader of the BRP majority, now Connor Devereaux-Mountbatten was eligible as well for leading the Unity Coalition.
As the Commons vote commenced, Mr. Devereaux-Mountbatten voted for the British Royalist Party's leader after all, and the nomination of Kasimir Devereaux proceeded to the House of Lords with a final vote of 3 in favour and 2 abstaining. However, the House of Lords, after questioning the nominee, voted 1-2 against confirming him as nominee, meaning the Commons had to nominate someone else. This time, the Unity Coalition selected independent politician Crushita Stuart-Telcontar as leader, and the Commons nominated him 3-2, despite an effort by the British Royalists to quickly switch leaders and nominate their candidate once more. After another round of questioning, the House of Lords voted to approve Mr. Stuart-Telcontar as Prime Minister with two votes in favour and one absence. As a result, Crushita Stuart Telcontar was summoned to Buckingham Palace by His Majesty the King, where he accepted the task of forming a new government as the region's first independent Prime Minister.

Greetings, people of the New United Kingdom! Firstly, I would like to thank you all for your confidence in me as your new Prime Minister, the road to this office for me has been odd, but I am excited to serve the region none the less. Having only been here a month, I am amazed at the level of time and dedication many great members put into this region, we are truly lucky to be here, and I am lucky to serve you.
This government will be one of unity that hopefully everyone can get behind. We will work for the betterment of this region and tirelessly aspire to make this great region even greater. I also want us to listen to all people, even those who say they are our opposition, for only through communication can we keep this region united, the opposition after all, is just as important as the government for they are the people who keep us accountable. I also endeavor to listen to all people of this region, hear their voice, their complaints and their suggestions and take them into account when planning government policy. I encourage all citizens to come to me with anything they might have to say to the government, ideas, praise or criticism.
This government will look to both help establish a truly united region and to increase activity and to make the region a fun and exciting place to be. With that in mind, I would like to announce part of the cabinet:
As Foreign Secretary The Rt. Hon. Lucas Spencer-Wessex, MP for Southern England As Home Secretary The Rt. Hon. Charles Watson-Turing-Donald, Baron Swansea, Lord of Parliament As Culture Secretary The Hon. Connor Deveraux-Mountbatten, MP for Northern Ireland
I am sure you all will have as much trust as I do in them by the end of this term, I am sure we will give you cause to celebrate!
In closing, I would once again like to thank all of you for this privilege to work for the region. It gives me great joy to see that people have such confidence in me despite being so new to this region.
Spud Save the King and Glory to the New United Kingdom!
