- Introduction
-
Welcome to the New United Kingdom's Foreign Update! There's been a lot going on in the region, so this edition is really quite full. We weren't able to write detailed reports on everything, so here's a quick breakdown of the other news:
- The New United Kingdom became a founding member of the Guild of Britons, an inter-regional group.
- The region has started a brand new recruitment campaign, with 100 telegrams sent everyday.
- The RMB hosted a discussion on the pros and cons of English, Francais, and Español. Personally, although English is my main language, j'aime parler en français, y hablo español!
I'd like to thank all those who contributed to the Update (in order of appearance): George Wessex, Lucas Wessex, Charles Watson-Turing-Donald, and King Edward Windsor.
- Constitutional Convention
-
A Constitution is the basic law of the land. It provides for basic governance, created by its people and affords them protections and rights. As such, it is important to have a Constitution which reflects the needs of the region, her people and its practical. That is to say that all elements of the Constitution work with one another without conflict. As time has gone in and despite several amendments to the Constitution of the region, HRH The Prince of Wales, who at the was the Prime Minister, announced, with the Consent of His Majesty The King a Constitutional Convention. Over the course of just two months, representatives from all branches of Government worked with the citizens, as one too; debate, review and re-write all articles of the Constitution. There was some heated debate most notably over the Executive and Parliament, including the election of the Prime Minister - should a Westminster system be followed or a Prime Minister directly elected? In the end, it was decided to provide a basic framework which allowed legislation to be presented to regulate elections and the election of the Prime Minister. In a unique way, the Privy Council was also given the power to review and re-structure Parliament, so that it may always, meet the needs of the region, without requiring new legislation. On 28th November 2017, the Second Constitution was voted on in a public referendum, where it received 83.3% in favour.
- Carlisle's Return
-
If you've been on the New United Kingdom's RMB any time in the past two weeks, you may have noticed a rather menacing presence. It appears that our old dictator, Lord Carlisle, is back at it again! In case you don't remember, Lord Carlisle is the man who, last January, suspended the constitution of what was then TNUK and declared himself absolute ruler as Founder and King, before proceeding to banject just about everyone in the region. Now, it appears that Carlisle has something to say. Just what, exactly, that something may be is a bit of a guessing game. We can say definitively that he's got something against our founder, HRH Cobi Wessex, Prince Royal, as well as against our Sovereign, HM King Edward X. We know that he sees our region as illegitimate, and that he lays claim to NUK (as well as other regions such as KGB) as a subsidiary region of The United Kingdom or TUK, which he's now somehow become the leader of (with all its whopping 13 nations!). He seems to think that we're a region of raiders. Oh, and apparently "whoever wins the Ashes, gets a celebration party," whatever the f*** that means. The thing to watch about Carlisle's return has been the response of NUKers on the RMB. Some have declared that Carlisle is a "fracking nutter" and have wished him well in his loony bin. Some have considered whether it's worth waging war against Carlisle and TUK. Others have suggested turning this saga into a reality television programme. A ban on Carlisle was considered, and still may happen. But ultimately, it was The Republic of The Free Mercians who best summed up the regional response: "Umm... K."We'll be sure to re-visit this story in a future update if Lord Carlisle manages to ever be taken seriously!
- December Elections
-
Politics - one of the most important and fun parts of the New United Kingdom, and of NationStates as a whole. It kicked off again in early December, when King Edward announced a parliamentary election. This time, only three Constituencies were available, so it was going to be a tight race. First to announce candidacy was regional co-founder Connor Wessex, who was running as an Independent. Next, mere hours after returning to the region from retirement, was Charles Watson-Turing-Donald, who was running for the Conservative Progressive Party (CPP). He was followed by Lucas Wessex, leader of the CPP. Soon after Crushita Telcontar was added to the ballot, for the pseudo-satirical Not A Party (NAP). The final, last-minute announcement was that of new citizen and legal expert Tiberius Cecil, who was also running as an Independent. Next came the campaigns. All candidates, except from Crushita, posted campaigns, which covered such topics as ensuring the new Constitution didn't conflict with existing laws, and increasing the region's foreign relations. The same sentiments were expressed in the Candidate Debate, expertly hosted by His Majesty the King. All candidates seemed qualified, and nobody was clearly winning. And so it was that early on December 7th, the polls opened. For 48 hours the public voted for the future Members of Parliament. The results were as follows, with expert commentary added for your convenience. Those in bold were elected as MPs: ~ Connor Wessex (Independent) - 20.8% - A fantastic campaign by Connor, which resulted in his fully deserved election.~ Charles Watson-Turing-Donald (CPP) - 33.3% - After coming out of retirement, and being announced as the CPP's Prime Ministerial Candidate, Charles gained exactly one third of all votes. ~ Lucas Wessex (CPP) - 29.2% - With a focus on activity, Lucas gained the second-highest number of votes. The former Prime Minister clearly isn't going anywhere!~ Crushita Telcontar (NAP) - 0% - Perhaps due to his lack of campaign, not a single person voted for this potato-themed Canuck. As Crushita would say, "Praise Spud!"~ Tiberius Cecil (Independent) - 16.7% - A newcomer to the region, but not to NationStates, Tiberius' well-written campaign resulted in him being just a single vote away from being elected. We hope he will try again in the next elections! As Charles was the CPP's Prime Ministerial candidate, and the CPP gained the majority of the House of Commons, Charles was sworn in as Prime Minister on December 11th. He now currently leads the Government. Congratulations to all those elected, and commiserations to those who didn't make it this time around.
- The King's New Year's Address
-
New Year's Address 02/01/2018 Fellow Citizens of the New United Kingdom,
"Every time you tear a leaf off a calendar, you present a new place for new ideas and progress." - Charles Kettering
A New Year has now begun, full of possibilities, opportunities and wonder, yet also full of pitfalls and dangers. However, I am reassured time and time again that the resilience, determination and steadfastness of the Citizens of the New United Kingdom will be more than enough to overcome any challenge that this Realm might face.
In this coming year, I sense a renewed age of prosperity, growth and regional development as we expand and promote our ideals of freedom, justice and democracy across NationStates. Whilst we were once a small and closed off realm, we are now an optimistic and outward society which is more like a family than a region; a family of which I am so proud and honoured to be a member.
Whilst it is traditional for many people to celebrate the New Year via a New Year's Eve celebration, as many of us have done, I would like to host a celebration of the New Year now, within the new year itself. 2018 will be a great year for the Realm and so it seems fitting to celebrate our hopes and dreams for the year in it. As such, I invite you all to join myself and members of the Royal Family at Sandringham tomorrow where we shall toast to the future and remember the past.
I hope you all enjoy a happy and fulfilling year and look forward to sharing all of the happiness that it has to offer with you all!
Long Live the New United Kingdom! Yours faithfully,
HIBM the King of the New United Kingdom
Thanks for reading! We invite you to visit the New United Kingdom!
