Because implementing a living wage will maximize the most amount of net benefits, I affirm the resolution that, “Resolved: Just governments ought to require that employers pay a living wage”Since the resolution uses the term ought, which means moral obligation, I value morality. The only way to achieve morality is through utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is the moral theory that is based on maximizing the greatest good for the greatest number. Thus my value criterion is maximizing the most amounts of the net benefits. Use Utilitarianism when creating policies because: a. Government policies entail tradeoffs b. public action is required from the inability of individual action to achieve certain morally desirable ends. A. A living minimum wage brings people out of poverty. According to Dube, an economist, an immediate increase in the federal minimum wage is projected to reduce the number of those living in poverty by around 6.8 million. B. A living wage will boost consumerism. raising the minimum wage puts more money in the pockets of working families when they need it most, thereby augmenting their spending power.¶ Increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 by July 1, 2015, would give an additional $51.5 billion over the phase-in period to affected workers, who would, in turn, spend those extra earnings. This projected rise in consumer spending is critical to any recovery, especially when weak consumer demand is one of the most significant factors holding back new hiring. Cooper and Hall '13 Raising the minimum wage means minimum wage workers have more money to expend which means more money ripples throughout the economy as minimum wage employees are able to spend more. -Halvorsen '14 C. Consumerism is good. Consumerism is fast emerging as an environmental force affecting major business decisions as consumers become more aware about their rights. A broad recognition and growing acceptance of consumerism makes the firms more consumer‐oriented rather than product‐oriented. It is noted that consumerism tends to serve as an opportunity for those corporate managers who are able to identify and anticipate the consumer’s problems. FOR THESE REASONS: Article 1 Section 1. Raise the minimum wage to $10/hr Edited by Wildeboden, Mar 28 2015, 10:05 PM.

Hey, you are talking to a Dutch person, we use bycicles as a main transportation, it is way healthier then driving a car! Okay, I am the government of Bangladesh and I say we raise wages. Do you know what happens? Western corporations say 'bye, bye' to Bangladesh and 'Here we come' to China or Africa or some other poor country. Millions of Bengals will be jobless, for many decades they have been reliable on the clothing industry. People who are old will not find work easily and generations will be lost because there is little to no work. (The western society controls most of the money supply, making weaker and not western nations dependable). Raising the minimum wage creates new problems, they must be tackled too otherwise your not going to change much. |

You have to start somewhere to get the skills, and when you're so poor, education is not going to be top notch. The skills they will earn will have to start from low wage jobs. In addition, back then in these cases people would strike. Now, due to globalization, people on strike will be fired and there will be a rush of other people who would want the job. A higher minimum wage would decrease turnover rates, decrease unemployment, and therefore corporations will spend less training new employees and employees will have increased productivity knowing there is more competition for higher paying jobs. When they work harder they learn the skills needed for a higher wage job faster. |

What if we tested and compared some of these theories by raising welfare in some states, since Buxton has already reduced welfare? |

Yeah, but it still is conflict of interests, you know? What is right and what is wrong, in the end? Atleast it would be problematic to come with a kind of realistic scenario, in either way, there is just no comparison. Unless we would try and find as much figures and researches as we can get and try to calculate the outcome, that is a lot of work. |

It is healthier and I like the Netherlands. But United Nations counts as government too. But we're getting off hand here. the resolution: just govts ought to implement a living wage. If we are just, we implement the wage basically. The government is just. But the corporations will be the unjust ones. So the main argument here is that the people we want to help will not be helped. If we raise the minimum wage in AS, our citizens will thrive. And also, make our laws applicable to corporations no matter where they go. It's like me shooting a guy in Bangladesh from the U.S. wouldn't I be guilty for murder even if Bangladesh said its okay? |
