Wow factor aside, the other thing is control, knowing how far to go.

i'd avoid PS as much as possible. when dealing with people or anything with a face, sometimes its difficult to know where to draw the line and its easy to go overboard with removal of blemishes, wrinkles, moles, lines, patches.... and before you know it, your subject has gone back 20 years in age.

with scenes, landscapes, i try to capture and show it like it is. if i don't like something (e.g. lamp-post) i'll change my angle and take a second shot. but at all times i'd avoid altering the realism otw a kampung hut can look like a sec 4 woodwork project by the time you're done with PS..

somehow i think being a golfer influences that - play as it lies (i.e don't move the ball, and in photography speak, don't alter reality).

Sometimes we have to alter reality .. Otherwise it will be injustice to the picture..
You wouldn't move the golf ball (subject) but you would pluck away the weeds in front of the ball or flatten the ground in front of the ball?
Example below is a good example.
Original picture .. I was like "damn .. I had a nice pose .. and that ugly box had to be in the way .." I wouldn't leave it that way .. it's stands out like a sore thumb!

yup, in this case removal of the box would be better, but that's minimal and to me it doesn't interfere with your main subject which is the dancer. in a scenery pic, cleaning up too many blemishes would imho make it look too perfect.
oh, btw nooo... never pluck grass or flatten the ground. that's called improving your lie, which incurs a penalty

At the end of the day, I think it depends on a few factors:

  • If you are looking to 'record' a journey or something like that, I'll probably not pp.
  • If you are out to create an effect, or paint a story, I think its ok to pp.

Do we consider the following as post-processing?

  • cropping
  • adjustment of contrast
  • converting to B&W

After all, many of us now shoot in RAW. Gives us a lot of freedom to experiment...

On the other hand though, to take a picture close to what you want, often involve PP.

PP go hand in hand with Digital Photography nowadays... It is great to be able to capture something you like, but often, condition or lighting will prevent you to get that "perfect" (according to each individual) shot.

Before I take a shot, normally I would already know how I want it to look at the final image. You do everything you can, be it by changing the angle, changing lighting direction or changing the mood of the subject... some you can change right there, but some it is better to leave it on PP to achieve the final image.

PP should be subtle and enhance your idea.

My basic principle when comes to PP is do the least, achieve the best.
