One more thing ... that bare contact .. it burns when shortcircuit... imagine that bare contact just touching your A700 when it short circuit...

You probably be first to know how your A700 will smell like!

I will do a version II of my own Batt pack. If anyone interested, let me know and I can do all together when I do mine. Please PM me.

It will have around 4A battery, on off switch and straight round cable.

I used to put those in Lowepro Lens case 1, so you need to get one yourself or find some cheaper option.

Regards,

Hart

excelglsi, i think i PMed you on this - i think the 8A batt may be a little too much - anyway we'll found out soon enough ;)

for the contacts on the 5400, its only 1 for positive and 1 for negative and iirc its the two ports closest to you, i.e. the first to be exposed when you slide open the 5400's battery cover. just stick +ve to +ve and -ve to -ve and you can't go wrong.

just trace your cable to ensure you're connected to the correct polarity of the batt.

Chaoxangel -- i really recommend that you tidy up the mod. using batt clips and unsoldered joints is asking for trouble. in ver 1 i did that, and nearly caused some arcing. thankfully there was no damage. then i did a weak solder joint, which came apart on a church camp, with no tool to repair. again, i was fortunate that the wires managed to stay together long enough. hence in the mod session i'd emphasised to the guys the need for double-looping the joints and a diy clip to hold the cable, so that tension is never on any of the joints. it may sound like overkill from a non EE's point of view, but at least i can rest assured and leave the batt connected 24x7 without fear of a short.

6V8A is sebek big sia! :o :o :o You'd probably lao half way thru a wedding shoot.

I already felt the weight of my 6V4.5A to be coming down on me. That I'm not carrying that one anymore. A battery capable of a deeper cycle helps here.

I think I'm getting a Yuasa 6V3A one.

Thanks for the tips bro.

Nowadays, I don't carry that garage battery anymore - I'm planning to make another mod soon - I've gotten some heat shrunk tubing for the joints as well.

I am looking into a 330volt + battery insert mod with a 4 core retractile cable.... Looking at the costing of it and doing a bit of math to find out if it's feasible. I wonder if it would be better if I just buy a Minolta EP-2/Sony FA-EB1AM...

Currently, I'm just using the AA rechargeable batteries. It's much smaller, and less of an encumbrance for now.

Next project: Portable battery mod for Studio Lighting kit... :D

the recycle rate has nothing to do with the size of the batt you carry. to get a higher recycle rate you'd need to hook up a second batt to the ep2 port - Hart and I were mulling over the possibility of splicing the 6V3A or 6V4.5A batt to go into both ports, but we didn't take it all the way. one possible drawback is even if you get that kind of recycling rate, i.e. higher than 5s or 4s, chances are you're going to burn your flash tube. i don't have the specs of what the ep2 is capable of doing, i.e. the recycle rate at full power, so if you know, and can keep within that rate, you can try sharing power from one pack, or tapping a second pack, which would mean you get multiple exposures at full power, for over 1000 shots

Bro Dewakarma has a Minolta EP-2/Sony FA-EB1AM. I could probably ask him how fast it recharges.

The EP-2/FA-EB1AM's specific job is to improve the flash recycle timings as well as enabling the flash setup to last out the night without necessitating a battery change in the middle of an event, for example.

I have to point out that the existing battery mod, with slightly better flash recycle times, should fit job description bill nicely.

Besides, the circuitry of EP-2/FA-EB1AM includes a DC/DC transformer that delivers 330volts direct into the F56AM. I reckon, it's going to be a more complicated mod, and it adds a potential electrical shock hazard.

Let's say, from personal experiences, and not nice to get shocked.

In that consideration - It's better to get the EP-2/FA-EB1AM and run a 10 AA cell combination. IMHO, with a large multiple bank charger, 10 powerex AA cells recharges faster than a sealed lead acid battery.

p.s. I did the modding because I had nothing better to do... ;)

-----

My current 8-second recharge - FIAMM 6V4.5A is pretty bad - and combined with the weight, it's not worth it for me to carry my mod around. The only good thing with this one is that I can shoot for a month with it.

I am actually not thinking of buying the Yuasa 6V3A right away - until I can borrow a bro's existing one to verify that it can charge up around 5 secs from a full discharge - until which, then I'd fix up a new wire and purchase the battery proper. ;)

I think, an acceptable recycle time, and a reasonable weight is something to work towards for.

bro, you can ask the guys who did the mod, plus i'd tell you the recycle is 5s tops for a full power discharge with no cut-off. i had to take a few like that at my grandma's birthday last sat (lousy restaurant lighting and ceiling).

strange that your sla's recycle rate is 8s. i suspect the cable is too thick, and you are losing current along it. btw the yuasa takes about 3 hrs to recharge although i tend to leave it overnight.

just curious about the ep2 - how does 6x1.5v batt (9v) convert into 330v? is there a cap that sucks the lifeforce out of these batts?
