hi everyone . i find that i have a minor problem storing the photos i have shot with my alpha . the numbers goes back to 0000 after every 9999 . normally everyday when i go back home , i will just take out every photos from the memory card into another HDD where i store all the photos taken by this camera . as time goes by , more and more photos ... soon after the first 9999 , i find that there are repeating file numbers that prompt for overwrite !!! then i decide to have them seperated by categories like outdoors , indoors , close ups , portraits ... these are in a folder itself where i keep my everyday shots which is then stored into their category . for a whole event or a day at a particular place , like weddings AD , a day at where , kids event at community centres , i will have another folder for them .and in every category , when i add and add in everyday , the numbers began to meet again , and promt for overwrite ... then i decide to split them up once again ... every category , there will be number folders from 0001-0100 , 0101-0200 ... 0501-0600 ... and so on ... very very troublesome leh !!! <_< i find it troublesome and quite a headache to put the newer photos into the category everytime , have to open more folders for running numbers ... like to know from everyone how do you store the your photos . hope i can have a better way to store & organised my photos well . thank you .

I do not use the software but manual copy and paste. I store in different folder by date and description. Additional info added as well. Placing the year follows by month and day allows you to sort the folders chronologically by date. eg. 01 Dec 2007 will be '20071201' Eg. Photos 16 Dec @ from Sungei Buloh '20071216 Sungei Buloh' or '20071216 SBWR' if my shutter count hit 10K and counter reset, I add the text 10K. eg. '20071216 10K Sungei Buloh' or '20071216 10K SBWR' |

waiting to see more advises & tips here ... |

mine's quite a mess, though this is what i've created as a framework. the mess is because a lot of the photos are still pending work before i "file" them. 1. main folders for category (e.g. street, events, nature, people etc) 2. sub folders for sub-cat (under say events: wedding, church, corporate, etc) 3. within each of those sub-folders - a short desc (like clkoh's) and the date 4. and within each of those detailed folders, three folders: "good", "ok", "bad" as for bad pictures, i keep them but will delete them if i'm pressed for hdd space. otw you never know if part of any of them can be cropped one day as stock photos. |

... bro trigger's method really sounds like a mess to me ... <_< so basically , the photos will be stored in different categories like what i did ... and inside the said category , more sub folders will be opened ... , but what i have faced inside the sub folders are the numbers that meet each other after a 9999 cycle ...01. sort by dates 02. keep those unwanted , lousy , CMI blur photos aside in a folder until later then delete them all ... thanks bro trigger .

I use similar files structure, but more on category then by dates. But it had been a long time I didn't tidy up the folders, it's a mess now

this is good if you can remember all your catergory But it's should be very time consuming to tidy up, let alone RAW conversion, post processing, resize image etc

for so many years , i cannot 'tahan' seeing my folders in a mess . <_< , but i do have a different folder for different camera used . like P1 to P10 , theres a folder , V1 another , F717 , F828 & LX2 etc all in their respective folders with all the sub folders >>> now they are altogether in a single folder named "HISTORY" in an external HDD ... my current most popular is this a100 . i have not stored any of the photos which are PP , normally after PP & posted , i delete those PPed ones and the originals are still the same .

its actually very structured and easy to find pictures. only thing is the "mess" is contributed by myself, due to the "STAGING" folder where i literally dump entire CF card folders into. then sometimes i work on a few for selection but don't finish up the entire set, so its technically work-in-progress and this main folder, although meant to be a temporary STAGING area, has become a marketplace. i've been trying to find time to sort through them in recent months, but as with all pp work, its always easy to shoot, siong to pp. by my reckoning, its 7 mins for every time you press the shutter, for time taken to: download, sort, pp, save, backup. |

then i decide to have them seperated by categories like outdoors , indoors , close ups , portraits ... these are in a folder itself where i keep my everyday shots which is then stored into their category . for a whole event or a day at a particular place , like weddings AD , a day at where , kids event at community centres , i will have another folder for them .
 <_<
