when i saw this thread my first reaction was

Ming, this is not a lens you really want to own. firstly 500mm (range) IS good for birding but as clkoh and the rest of us will tell you, even 1200mm isn't enough. sometimes you cannot get near enough for a clear sharp shot.

the 500mm mirror at f/8 will suck if you intend it for birding. and i'm not talking about the doughnut bokeh - psccy and i were discussing this last evening and personally, i kinda like it, BUT, this lens will require you to be quite close to your subject or you will get very soft images as bro shadow has mentioned.

for anything beyond 30m and in low light, forget about this lens. so imho, this is a lens with very limited use. maybe good if you are the super shy type or gatecrasher at an event (or *ahem* voyeur  )

weight-wise, its super light for a lens in that range, but in terms of AF performance and picture quality, a lot depends on what you want it for.

maybe those who own a 500mm mirror can list down what they a) bought it for B) have actually used it for.

i'll start:

a) birding B) justifying 2nd dry cab  :banghead:

thank you bro trigger , this might be what i want to know . i may not be the gatecrasher type but i think i might use this to shoot people far away from me B) ...

i do not intend to use it for birds , but after looking around , it seems like a good lens to bring along when going to the zoo , though i only go once every year ... still the common usage for this lens is unknown ... besdies birding ...

maybe those who own a 500mm mirror can list down what they bought it for have actually used it for.

1. birding
2. moon-ing
3. voyeur-ing :P
4.

I brought it with me during the Alpha Shootout at Orchard...
As TH mentioned... the lens is a little soft... probably due to the reflex design... But personally the softness might be good for shooting people...

I try to find a good shot from that day and post it here for Ming and everyone else...

I cannot find a good reason for myself to own this lens...

1) Fixed F8, dark... and limited room to play with exposure (shutter speed/iso only)
2) Cannot use teleconverter (so I heard). Even if can, adding 1.4x will add one stop from F8 (wah dark liao). I already making noises about the F6.3 i got from Tamron 200-500mm.
3) Mirror bokeh
4) Not suitable for bird in flight!

A Sigma 500mm f4.5 will be better choice although more expensive and heavier. I will think it will be faster than the reflex.

Bro...

I tend to put the underpart of my A100 through a lot of abuse one...
I try to find something sturdy that I can rest the camera against... Then I can shoot at slower than 1/500...

:thumbsup1: Tripods are everywhere in our surrounding! :thumbsup1:
