Ming don't use tripod. He is no longer beginner anymore .. haha..

Anyway, I am not a macro expert but for comparison, more info from you, our bros then can help.

1) Are you Macro lens? Ming is using Sony's 100mm macro
2) What aperture/shutter/iso you shot at?
3) Flash used? With diffuser?
4) What focus used? Manual-C/S/A? Spot/Wide/Local?
5) File/picture size?

Maybe you want to post a picture and provide exif information.

Don't worry about buying lens first . I can borrow you my very basic Macro lens to start first . I still have my sigma 70-300mm which is Macro enabled at 20mm but its 1:2 & a Minolta 35-70mm , marco at 70mm but 1:4 IIRC ...

Wah , clkoh don't like that say me leh ... Still a beginner in some ways la ...

Substance , is this what you wanted to see ?

For me , 100% cropped , you may not have to get so close to the object to shoot to get the sharpness . I have to use Photoshop to do some sharpening too .

Too bad i am not good at explanations , see if other Bros can assist along . :)

Sony is 75-300mm . It can Macro at the 300mm end but i think its not 1:4 ... Correct me if i am wrong anyone ... ? Frankly i will not consider the Macro for this 75-300mm , but it still can take great pictures if you don't expect too much from it .

It can shoot pretty flowers too , but not to the extreme of Macro . You can crop crop crop till you are happy with your photo . :P

Do post a photo or 2 here , so we can know how much you expect you photo to be .

Well, I am not a pro either, but just to share.
I normally do not use tripod when doing macro. My set up is very simple, a Tamron 90 with 7D and a mounted flash by the side. Most importantly is the aperture you used and of cos, having a dedicated macro lens do play a part too. Depending on the surrounding lights and subject, my metering used varies.

Hello Bro Excelglsi , Substance already have a DLSR , so its best that he can have a Macro Lens or some filters to go on .

Save up for a anything else , either one can come first to start Macro shooting , for me if i were to start all over again , i wll get these by priority ...

01. Close Up Filters
02. Flash
03. Macro Lens
