if the pics are not sharp chances are its due to hand-shake. at 300mm focal length, unless you shoot in very bright conditions you won't have sufficient shutter speed that's greater than the focal length hence the handshake.

a tripod may be your best bet for now.

when taking macro, which mode do i use?

av or shutter priority? or the macro mode? or program mode? or full auto mode?
then the focus setting, how do i set it to only focus at the middle?

i am a A200 user with tammy 90mm macro lens.. no ext flash yet but saving now..

Usually in the A mode , but sometimes , have to use the M mode . If all fails , there is a Macro mode ...

But the lens is definitely have to be in Manual Focus .

Hello Bro Excelglsi , Substance already have a DLSR , so its best that he can have a Macro Lens or some filters to go on .

Save up for a anything else , either one can come first to start Macro shooting , for me if i were to start all over again , i wll get these by priority ...

01. Close Up Filters
02. Flash
03. Macro Lens

thanks for sharing your thots on this ming. very interesting. filters 1st and macro lens 3rd. maybe i'll hold off buying a macro lens then... i was very tempted after our last SBG outing...

my kit sony 70-300 also have the macro words printed there but im really too noob to understand, can guide me along? thx all

Hi,
I believe your Sony 75~300 is very similar to my Koboron 60~300. Yes, at 300 it's 1:4, at the minimum focusing distance of 1.5m. This is not bad for starting, however, I also like Ming, not consider this as macro.

Real macro lens can lead you to at least 1:1. The simplest way for you is to add a close-up filter, so you can focus nearer. However, it's always good to get acromatic type, for the quality sake. Also, single element type may be cheap, but if you use it to zoom above certain focal length, image will become very blur due to incorrect light path. Hope this help a little.

I'm newbie but still kehpoh here.

When taking macro, I will use full manual. I don't fully trust the metering system, as they commonly deliver only mid tone result. If metering is not very accurate, whatever mode you choose also useless, except manual. Maybe A700 is better, I don't know.

Focusing is manual too. If you want AF, and focus always at center, you can change your focus setting as that, or any 1 of 9 position for my A100.

I think flash is very important. Lighting is the main thing in photography, whether you use it as main light source or fill in. To start, built-in flash is good, if you have enough $, get external one with DTTL, helps a lot. My flash don't support DTTL, so I have to do manual.

Good for you to have macro lens. I wish I have one too!
Sorry to hijacked the reply.

Yannh , yo have more knowledge than i do . I still do not know anything about midtones & metering ... Just take the camera & shoot is all i know .

You did good explanations here .

>>> Bro cecilsg , you may want to start of with some cheapo Sigma Lenses with a macro mode at 200-300mm end at 1:2 . Not so difficult to use .
