For those of you who are interested, I had a chance to use the both the Minolta 85mmG (mine) and CZ 85mm (autumnite’s) side by side a while back during Cherlyn's shot.

I’ve chosen two photos to share. However, the Minolta was taken at f2.8 and the CZ at f2.0. Both are taken with my A100 and straight from the camera without further sharpening.

My general impressions are as follow:

1) The CZ is sharper, but I prefer a bit of softness to my models shots.
(However, if you want ultimate sharpness, go for the 135mm.)
2) The CZ focuses a bit faster and is more silent.
3) The CZ is more contrasty. (So what’s new?)
4) The CZ has a very slight red cast but the minolta is generally cooler.
(Again, I prefer the Minolta colour)
5) The Minolta’s bokeh is nicer. (Very subjective, I know)

So there you have it. I must stress that the differences are very minute and generally not very obvious. The Minolta has the advantage of being a bit cheaper too but only available in second hand. So if you are buying from oversea, you would have to take a bit of risks. But either one would make a very good portrait lens.

I also made an interesting observation.

The Minolta 85mmG photo may look a bit soft. But when I simply slide the contrast bar a bit to the right in LR, the whole picture looks very much sharper.

This would very much explain why the CZ, with it’s optic and special coating produces a more contrasty image thus giving it a much sharper look.

Seems like most bros here prefer the 85G than the 85CZ...
I'm still looking for one...
