The term “fast" or "bright" lens was used even before AF was invented. So in photographic term, it has nothing to do with how fast the AF works.

Usually, used as a relative term, a lens with larger maximum aperture or smaller f-number is considered a faster lens. E.g. the 70-200 f2.8 is a faster lens than the 70-200f4. (even if both of them were to be manual focus lenses)

Over the years, we’ve seen several very fast lenses like the Minolta 58mm f1.2, Canon 50mm f1.0 or even a Carl Zeiss 50 f0.7.

definition 1 = ability to shoot at high shutter speed (Widest aperture size). This is generally the meaning....

definition 2 = ability to focus very fast (AF speed)

definition 3 = both above

Don't confuse everyone again. :knock:

Generally, fast lens is what Clem had mentioned. Generally in photography (OLD SCHOOL) no one will relate "FAST LENS" to it being faster in AF. If you want to says that than just say "FAST AF" or whatever but not "FAST LENS".

Sorry folks..

It's ok lah bro. Good that everyone have the same understanding of the common terms being used.

Imaging this .....

DISCLAIMER: The persons in this story is fictional and in no way relate to any real person. CZ85 AF being slow is for you to test and find out.

Bro A: Hi Bro, my BBB still not cured yet. What's a fast lens that's good for portrait.
Bro B: Just get the CZ85 1.4. Super fast lens. You still using A100 ?
Bro A: Still with A100. Thanks bro, CZ85 next on my shopping list.

...... 2 weeks later
Bro A: Hi bro, I bought the CZ85. It's super slow
Bro B: Errr ? 1.4 still not FAST ?
Bro A: It's more like 2 rather than 1.4 leh bro.
Bro B: Lens broken is it and cannot use 1.4 ?
Bro A: What you talking about all this 1.4 thinggy ?
Bro B: Aperture lah, can use at f1.4 ?
Bro A: Oh that one, yes can use f1.4, but still slow leh.
Bro B: f1.4 still slow. You shooting in the dark is it ?
Bro A: No lah, bro. I find the AF very slow, takes around 2 seconds to AF.
Bro B: Oh :mymistake: .... you talking about AF speed. CZ 85 is like that one. You need to upgrade A100 to A700, AF better and faster.
Bro A: Alamak, now you tell me.

...... 3 weeks later
Bro A: Hi bro, I bought the A700. It's fast now, but I am broken.
Bro B: Errr ? Why you broken?
Bro A: Bank broke.
Bro B: You got BBB virus ma..

:sofunny:

hehe .. the analogy is good. But it shows that the person asking not clear enough, and the person replying never clarify enough to give right answer...

Not right when buying something like 85mmCZ with it's price tag
