On the A100, there is no setting to increase the af focus speed. the af focus speed is more or less depend on the lens you are using. Generally for the same lens, the af speed is faster on the newer SONY DSLR body (A200, A350 and A700). if you are using the kit lens (18-70mm), the af speed should be reasonable enough for most cases ? how long did you experienced the af took to lock ? or did you experience af hunting, ie the af has more or less at the focus distance and now trying to lock on the focus point ? for exposure, if you do not want to thinker with aperture or shutter speed, just set it to "P" mode. Good enough for most situation and to start familiarizing with the camera and controls. At "P" mode you still have more controls compare to "AUTO" mode. Do read the manual to find out the difference. If you do want to move away from "P" mode, the next best mode to learn exposure is the "M"anual mode. This is where you will learn the co-relation between aperture and shutter speed and to know the metering, when and when not to trust the meter. Welcome to Alpha. Enjoy your stay here. !!!

Ohh Actually i've been using the 70-300 lens. the 18-70 lens is actually pretty good I've been using telephoto coz it gives a certain amt of DOF shots i want to do I've been doing panning on it too.. then sometimes while i pan the subject runs past den my cam goes and auto focus -_-; nothing new that emerges though Anyway, i've been shooting in Apeture and Shutter modes to get the feel of what each does each time i adjust it, tryin to move my way slowly into manual mode. Still got lots to learn though, coz i can't really seem to make the DOF effect that i want but i think it has smth to do wif my Fstop being limited to 5.6 I'm into people shots (i can't rmb the spelling) portrait shots i think I like the blurred background effect Of course wide angle shots should b nice but.. one step at a time yah? :x Better to learn basics first den move on to... 'bigger' lenses |

I'm a user of both a100 and a700. The a100 is a very formidable machine especially in day light (oughta mention that the night shots done by the a100 is just as amazing), It's just powerful if you are doing macro, landscapes, portraits - anything that doesn't require tenacious af, very high ISO sensitivity/noise performance, and fast shutter lag, the a100 it can pull it off, and does it very well. There was a time where I was using the a100 for weddings and events, I have to deal with similar problems as you especially in the AF department. To improve the AF performance, it's important to know that AF works by detecting contrast on a subject, so if you aiming at smooth things (even though they are brightly illuminated)- like the blue sky, your camera will most likely fail to AF. So to work with the a100, it's best for you to actively search for the nearest object that gives you lines and patterns - things with contrast, lock focus on it, then recompose, then shoot. Well, speedwise, the a100 is slow... though SSM Equiped lenses will give you better focus speeds, but that'd cost you. ------------- Depth of Field: f5.6 on a telephoto lens can be sufficient to create a relatively large bokeh - but it's also dependant on the subject's distance and the selection of your background. Shoot and try more, and you should be able to utilize the telephoto to your advantage. ------------- CZ = Carl Zeiss There currently are four Carl Zeiss lenses in our A-mount lineup: Planar T* 85mm F1.4 ZA Sonnar T* 135mm F1.8 ZA Vario-Sonnar T* DT 16-80mm F3.5-4.5 ZA Vario Sonnar T* 24-70mm f2.8 ZA |

Looks like we need to inject some BBB Virus into you before you need to know what is Fast AF Lens on A100 & A700 , then , you decide on which Brand to go for ... , Sony , Minolta , KM , Sigma , Tamron or CZs ... Maybe you like to shoot sports or fast moving subjects using the panning method with your 70-300mm . Did you tried using Manual Focus if you find the AF is not fast enough ? Otherwise focus lock with the Continous Focus should be fine . Look around the Photo A Day for our Bro Marah's shots , he did very well on panning !
