Hi all, I will be going to Europe for a 3weeks trip in May-June, hope to bring some good pictures back with me. However, I intend to travel light and don't wish to be burdened down by too much dslr equipment. Currently i am shooting with a Alpha A100, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, Sony 55-200mm, Minolta 50mm f1.7. I was thinking of bringing just the Tamron lens with me, but a bit concerned about the shortage of focal length. Taking the 55-200mm along would be nice, but a lil cumbersome to carry around 2 lenses. Its not a matter of the weight, but a matter of how i'll have to pack and carry them. I BELIEVE that i would mostly be shooting on the wider range, but don't want to miss out opportunity to grab some potrait shots. Thats why i think the 17-50mm might be just a little bit too short. I have always been keen on the CZ 16-80mm, and wondering if this would be a good opportunity to grab this lens before i go on this trip. Was thinking of selling off the Tamron to upgrade to the Zeiss. Or would a 18-250mm be even better? So, any comments/advices on how I could lens up for a good phototaking holiday? Would any other DSLR accessories be important? Eg. flash...blower...etc etc etc... |

Hi bro, I work in the travel industry and do travel pretty frequently. In fact, I will be going on board a Star Cruise vessel later today for a night to God-knows-where. Since weight is not an issue here, my suggestion is to bring both your Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and Sony 55-200mm. Yes, its true that you will be using the Tamron most of the time, but hey, you never know. I believe you have a good-enough camera bag to carry them. Blower, must bring. In-camera flash is good enough most of the time. You on a back packing trip or joining a package tour? If its the later, then I dont quite get your sentence 'Its not a matter of the weight, but a matter of how i'll have to pack and carry them.' You have missed out the most important thing. Your CF card! Since you will be away for 3 weeks, how many gb of CF cards do you have and intending to bring? 4gb, 8gb? No way bro. Should you have only a 4gb or maybe 8gb card, thats simply not enough, well at least for me, if you are shooting raw. On our last Cambodia trip for 4 days, I shot a total of approx 20gb of photos. It will be good to have and bring along an external hard drive to store all those photos. Do it on a daily basis. Generally, below are what I normally bring along during my overseas trip; Camera body 17-35mm 28-75mm Beercan Tamron 90 macro Flash + 10gb of CF cards + external hard drive Camera + flash batts Blower Tripod (depends) Call me KS, but I rather have them with me then missing a shot. Missing a shot do spoil my day. Plan well and enjoy your holiday. |

Bro, You can bring along these lenses with your Alpha A100, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, Sony 55-200mm. The only trouble is that you may need to change lens in btw. You may want to consider getting a superwide for the trip as well. Sigma 10-20mm or Sony/Tanrom 11-18mm. |

weishengg, frankly your set up is not heavy at all. a wide, telephoto and portrait lens, hmm.. that would serve you well, esp for a 3-week trip. just make sure you bring enough batteries, charger, travel adaptor, harddisk for backup and CF cards. one body and 3 lenses may seem a lot at first - i used to complain abt a km5d with kit lens and a sigma 70-300 - but once you get used to it its ok (hint: get a good camera backpack, not a shoulder sling). between now and your trip, start by bringing your cam and one lens with you to work everyday. then increase that to one spare lens, then all three in your current set up.

wow, hi all! sorry i havent been following up with my post over here, mainly checking my carbon copy post in clubsnap, never knew i had gotten such detailed replies over here at alphaslr!
thanks to everyone in advance first! ur advices and comments are really helpful! anyway, what i meant by "Its not a matter of the weight, but a matter of how i'll have to pack and carry them" ---> is that i'm fine with carry more weight, as long as they fit nicely into my backpack and continue to be easy to draw out to snap photo =) dont quite know how i'm going to pack up to carry an extra lens in a convenient position, cuz i think hanging a slightly larger camera bag around my shoulder is a little too conspicuous. but if i put it into the backpack (which i intend to carry), then its gonna be a little troublesome to take it out in "those moments" ya and thanks shadow for the reminder about the CF cards. i only have 2x2gb card now, and even though i don't shoot RAW, i still think that its not going to be enough. gotta find some way to get my hands on them btw shadow, you bring an external HDD for backup, but you don't have a laptop with you is it? how do you backup data from ur CF card to the HDD directly? those products out there seems quite expensive leh... unless you do it at internet cafes? oh and Trigger_Happy, do you have any good camera backpacks to recommend for travel? Because my luggage would be primarily carried in a single 60litre backpack, and I was wondering how easy is it to fit another camera backpack to what i carry. I still havent figure out if i'm gonna bring a proper camera bag or just the alpha dslr carrying case that came along with my alpha a-100 purchase, or even use my own outdoor slingbag. thanks to all once again, really appreciate it! |

bro, try a Kata waistpack. they are a larger version of the waist pouches tourists typically wear  but those are designed for cameras and lenses. i bought a Kata W-94 GDC Waist Pack recently, you may find that model a little too large for your needs. i got that to have quick access to my second body with a 70-200 and VG mounted. there are smaller versions though. try MSC or TK Foto. last week i also bought (rats, i'm becoming worse than Ming!!!) a Think Tank LC75 PopDown pouch, hooked up on a Think Tank Pro Speed Belt. that acts like a holster for even quicker access to my second body. yes, i carry two when on street shoots. for secure travel, get the lowepro flipside 300/ 200/ 100 (largest to smallest) but access to your camera is a little cumbersome though secure. as for hdd, yup, we carry hdds that read CF cards for backup - i use CompactDrive PD70X with a 40g hdd. that stays in my luggage in the hotel and weighs a lot less than a laptop, which i won't bring on a trip because: a) you won't feel secure leaving a laptop in the hotel room b ) heavier c) you normally won't have time/ energy after a day of shooting to download and view your pics. |

Yes, I agreed with bro Trigger here, though I am not crazy on camera bags like him.
Anyway, it will be good to have and bring along a portable HD. I am using the Epson P2000 Viewer HD of 40gb space. Most portable HD will allow you to insert your CF card and will then download your pic into the HD. 2 x 2gb CF cards are simply not enough for your trip, even if you are not 'trigger happy' type. |

Hi, thanks for the advice once again! I was actually thinking of getting the Crumpler 5 Million Dollar home, enough to carry my accessories (which is not much), my dslr body, 2 lens, and hook up my waterbottle on the outside! I like how tough and well built the bag feels (as compared to the lowepro ones, no offence though), but the price is such a damper... hope to snatch up a 2nd hand one in B&S before my trip! anyway bro Trigger & bro Shadow, any idea how much the Compactdrive or Epson HDD CF Card reader would cost at retail? could PM me the price if it isnt convenient revealing here, thanks once again to all!

Hi bro weishengg, Not too sure about the price for compactdrive. I bought my Epson P2000 from one of our bro here, over in CS, at S$400. Brand new, iirc, is at about S$1000+ then. |

The new price for P2000 was expensive when 1st launch, but now with newer P3000 and P5000 (even bigger & better screen), so second hand is cheaper. Thinking of selling my Epson P2000 + 1 extra generic battery for S$380.00, as unlikely to go for long trip next few years. If interested let me know. |
