You need to decide how you want to manage/group your photos in LR. Once that's decided you can then create a LR catalog for each of the group. One suggestion for the group is by calender year or every 6 months, every month, photo type (travel, scenic, portrait etc) or whatever works for you.

To create a new catalog in LR go to "File" -> "New Catalog". Create/store the catalog with the group. In this way you can move the whole group+catalog around easily.

If you don't bother about the changes you have done in LR as you have the final version created, you can remove the photos from the catalog. Just be careful not to "Delete" it. In the folder, press Ctrl-A to select all photos. Right click and select "Delete Photo..." and then "Remove". If you select "Delete from disk", the photos are deleted as well.

To optimize the catalog, go to "File" -> "Catalog Settings". Click on the optimize button.

Hope this help and anyone with better method or inaccuracy in the above method, please voice out. :)

Didn’t realize the catalog file size of Lightroom is so huge. Mine hit 10GB already.

Hmm…there’s only one thing to do…get a new hard disc…

Catalog file and Lightroom Preview are two different thing. You can safely delete Lightroom Preview folder, it contains cached images. The next time you start Lightroom, it will recreate this folder again.

Normally the catalog file shouldn't exceed few hundred MB. It's the preview folder will have few GB. By the way, like tankm suggested, I also create smaller catalog by calendar years...The larger a catalog file, the greater chance of file corruption.

Lastly, do backup photos regularly. I keep two backups, one at home, one at office~.

Some discussion even on how to move catalog from one pc to laptop (or vice versa) or from harddisk to external disk.. interesting read..
