Was reading through Scott Kelby's Digital Photography Book 2 and found a tip he made. When possible, he will shoot portraits with his camera connected to his computer and have the shot transferred directly to the computer, instead of storing it on a CF card. He also mentioned that Nikon and Canon have softwares for this. Can Sony Alpha DSLRs shoot tethered? I know the camera has a video out port... Sorry if my question sounds dumb and my technical knowledge of our camera is quite low... |

A700 comes with software that allows you to shoot tethered as well.

Soorry to disappoint you...haha but the A700 can use sony own software to shoot tethered... even the old KM7d can shoot tethered...u just have to get the software to do it...before it came together with the dimage software that allows it...or u can also use capture one pro. thru USB connector, not video output. As for a700, hart and I already tested it...it works...just not as smooth as capture one pro. Edited by Willis, Jun 15 2008, 06:18 PM.

Oh well, at least I now know that if I finally upgrade to A700 or better, I can try shooting tethered... Willis... How's your experience so far? Is shooting tethered really better for studio shoots? |

Shooting Tethered is a not so new development... (came with the digital camera) in the days of film, this is not possible. ![]() Quite a hassle if you have to bring your laptop around with you to a studio... with all the wiring here and there... especially if you have a PC sync cable attached, you'd have two lines running out of your camera, one to the strobes, one to the computer. (they usually Velcro the two lines together, so it looks like one large umbilical cord) Bro TH is actually trying out the WiFI SD card system if successful, I'd adopt it myself. Combine it with my existing RF flash trigger system, and I should be able to achieve full wireless freedom.

Pros and cons....u have to carry USB cables long enuf with u, and also a laptop.... if outdoor, u need a cardboard boxes to put your laptop in so that u can view the LCD in the sun....if shoot last longer, make sure u got eletricity plugs available.. it is slightly slower cos it takes about 2-3 seconds before it appears on the screen also....but otherwise, with a good software, u can straight away review what u have taken, also u check for every area of the photo to see if everything is in focus, u can also check histogram and exposure to compensate.--so u get the right combo on shutter speed and f stop of course, then the best part is u see the photo as u would on the web....actual big size...and color as well...cos our lcd on camera is always too bright and colors are exaggerated. Also, if your client is with you, u have them check list on the shots they wan from the group...and if u have a retoucher with you, he or she can review and see what need to be changed to get the right shot.....and even work on the photo on the spot...to see if u got the shot...if not then continue to make improvements to the shot. with the LCD....we cannot do that.. it is a integral part of shooting in studio, ....even outdoor, just that we cut corners sometimes or lazy ...haha! Anyway, if just having fun shooting, dont worry so much about these stuff unless u wanna "climb mountain". ahaha! |

still looking bro... i found eye-fi but from the email correspondences it sounds like the card will work though at a slightly limited range of abt 30 ft (10m) if used with CF adaptor. the only hurdle is apparently you need to set it up the first time over the internet, and it must not be behind a proxy server, which is s'pore's set up. if this is true even for the basic one w/o internet upload to flickr, smugmug etc, i.e. pure transmission to the laptop/ pc, then this may not be a viable product for use here. didn't come across any stuff like that at the pc show. |
