Master Jedi, with small birds like #13 can 400mm lens (or any lens for that matter) can still auto-focus? I vaguely remember reading somewhere most lens can only focus to a minimum size like 4 inches or something.
Master Yoda, can focus.. Our A700 can even focus on white wall. It is just a matter of how far you are and what tele lens you using hehe...

And that #13 bird hor .. is about 8-9inches big...
hmmm, so wrong i am...
ha ha ha...
tiny yellow sunbird, auto-focus it does?

Thanks Steadyshot, Ayukawa

-> Nat, All perching birds I used manual focus. BIF I AF.
Some predicatable bird actions (Parrot over hoop, Toucan/Bee-eater feeding, bird bath) I pre-focus and burst shoot

Where to auto-focus when the bird is not in the spot yet? Thanks for sharing, will try this technique next time

It is manual pre-focus, usually with tripod.

Example.. if you spot a flower that the bird or bee that keeps coming back to.. you manually focus on the flower, with sufficient DOF for the bird/bee.. Then you wait.. bird/bee comes... off the shutter goes clacking away..

For the show, you just have to find something that can help you to focus on..
Example, frame your picture with the girl holding the hola loop. Then wait for the right timing (just before parrot flies to the loop), you burst shoot 5fps..

For Toucan/Hornbill catching the fruit.. this is a bit difficult.. you do no know where the fruit going to be thrown... but the trainer would usually have given audience some clue where (like pointing where).. This one is hit and run ... either you get it or you don't..

I did this with the Bee-eater feeding.. but my picture (and setting) was not good.. Did not have oppurtunity to take better one.. next time??

You focus on the hand, then wait for the bird to fly..
Note that it will be too slow for you to press shutter if you look through viewfinder, so you cannot look through viewfinder.. head off the camera and watch out for bird flying towards the food... Be good if you have shutter release for this..
