Not at all.

Owning Picasso's brush doesn't mean you can paint like Picasso.

Owning Richard Clayderman's Piano doesn't mean you can play it like Richard Clayderman.

What makes people think - owning a DSLR makes them good photographers? They should wake up to their !)@*#& idea, It's just a tool! :P

DSLR makes ones lazy and impatient.
Shoot a lot and do not know what went wrong.
A good "Shi-Fu" or master will makes ones a better Photographer unless you are talented or gifted.
It is okay to be slow, as long you never stop.

There need to be a definition of what makes a 'good' photographer and 'better' photographer.. It is subjective also..

A good photographer knows his system well and knows how to make full use to take the best out of his out of his existing equipment.
A good photographer knows when is the right moment (to press the shutter)
A good photographer can visualise and frame a good "picture"
A good photographer knows how to post process
bla bla bla

What makes him/her a better photographer?? A DSLR compared to pns? Answer is yes and no. I think it is then all about knowing how to full use of that DSLR.

So I do admit a good DSLR can make better pictures though, but good photographer maybe not.

In that sense, I do not quite agree with you Richard.
If you already knows how to play piano, it may sound better on Richard Claydermen's piano, perhaps?

But picasso brush..has no add-value, it is just a brush.. so cannot be compared that way.. Ok .. but if you go on a step further .. by looking at what hairs the brush is made up.. then it may make some difference.. But like as said .. if you do not know how to paint .. whatever brush used is useless..

A pistol in the right hands (e.g. well trained assassin) could kill someone with a sniper rifle or any other "big" gun. A big gun does not make someone more powerful immediately.

Now imagine that same assassin equipped with one of the "big" guns. He could kill even more people in many different ways. However, the assassin might still keep his pistol reserved for certain situations.

Oooohhh, I thought this issue have been debated before.

Well just for the fun of it and also the re-cap.

Obviously is a no to me. Its not correct certificate for a better photograper. Its a back door certificate. As mentioned before, a better photograper, he understand the DOF, lighting exposure and also composition. All these things are actually a basic fundamental which a photographer need to know more or less. So like it or not to be a better photographer you need to master the 3 basics thing.

Does a DSLR make a "better photographer"
is technically different from:
Does a DSLR make "better photography"

If you ask the question in definite terms, like whether having or not having a DSLR camera will or will not define you as a better photographer. Then the answer, I'd give it in definite terms:
No. Living example: Eow makes awesome landscape shots with his Lumix LX2 and his A700. :P

Does a DSLR make "better photography"
In merit to the technological prowess and machine capabilities over standard e.g. PnS cameras of the same equavalent level,
e.g. an Entry Level DSLR to Entry Level PNS
or
e.g. a high level DSLR to a High Level PNS

Then my answer will be:
Yes, most of the time, with a couple of upsets at some points. Example: Seeing Eow use his Lumix LX2... sharp @ f2.8 for landscapes foreground and background also sharp, while DSLRs like a700 need to go down to f8 or f11... haiz... I wanna slam my a700 onto the ground at one point.

There will be a time when you gotten enough camera equipment and then you may suddenly reach a state of epiphany (meaning, you finally realise). That with the best equipment... ermmm... you still sucked, and ugh!... you are many thousands of dollars poorer.

I kenna this before, so I now concentrate on making good photos with what I have rather than seeking to buy new and better equipment.

So that's my two cents and that was how I interpreted the question. ;)

When taken to the same metaphor, of Piano and Piano player, it applies the same way: a good piano player and a good piano:

Having different equipment doesn't change the man behind it unless he wills himself to learn and make use of his equipment.

A good piano will have sound clearer, louder, stronger, hammer strikes that can fill a concert hall with ease. But how good is a piano if the player can't even do his musical scales?
