A900 is more or less a camera that's for the ardent shooter who wants a lot of resolution for things like photo stock, fashion, commercial prints, and etc... Well, I feel Sony didn't want to literately use the word Pro, but the camera is more or less headed that direction of Pro shooters. I think, bells and whistles aside, the A900 is a strong looking traditional camera on paper, and should be an awesome camera. Actually, in fact, I can confidently say, the best 35mm camera setup combination available on market now. (In the form of A900 + Zeiss Glasses) when used for the apparent target tasks it's designed for: (high resolution photography) Stock, Fashion, etc. I reckon that they (Sony) should be on the path to develop high speed machines in order to take on the 1D and D3 quite soon, and after releasing the other two FF bodies (if the rumors turn out to be true), as well as making updates to the entry level machines (A200, A300, A350) - upping the ante in terms of the number of bells and whistles fitted into these cameras. So technically, today, if you are truly concerned about video production, I think the current video implementations in DSLRs isn't as graceful as the current HDVCAM offerings (shooting stamina, AF, camera handling, no EVF, because in terms of video production, holding the camera in your palms and viewing via the screen isn't really a shakily good idea, most of the time when I use a DVCAM, i will use the EVF and only use an articulated screen for difficult shots), but I think, this should improve with the next few models. The HD video features, though promising, but may be limited by the speed of the slower contrast detect AF*** (when compared to phase detect...), and I would reckon that would smooth out with the next few designs around the corner, and possibly, will improve with Sony's implementation (quite confident that they will do a good job if they decide to put video in, like the smartly implemented live view of the A300 & A350). Right now, Sony has a fully featured range of Production and Broadcast products: from shooting, storing, editing, previewing, and showing (the total package). ***I think 5DMK2 uses Contrast detect AF for video mode - as seen from DPreview, which is a great thing because D90 is MF in video mode, and cannot take photos half way thru the video... But I do like to say that the 5D MK II has answered, on paper, almost all the bells and whistles: matching or in some cases exceeding the offerings of what other manufacturers have put into their cameras: The high ISO ratings offered by the D3/D700 (25600), The High Resolution offered by the A900 (comes close, but in low ISO, A900 will still have more resolution), The pricing of D700 and A900 (by being cheaper), The HD video capabilities of the D90 (offering 1080p, above D90's offering of 720p with contrast detect AF during video, correct me if I'm wrong), A reasonably competitive viewfinder when compared to Nikon's designs: 98% 0.71x, bumping into the middle of the offerings by Nikon's D700: 95% 0.72x, and D3: 100%, 0.7x All in All, the 5D MK II, judging purely by paper figures and Canon's historic consistency in giving good camera designs, should turn out to be a great camera.

If Sony wants to implement HD Video recording on the Alpha Cams, as what bro CA mentioned, I think it is not really difficult for Sony, see this Sony HDCAM..... but I wonder how much will that Alpha cam cost.. |
