First, I would like to thank the Admin for inviting me to share my newbie album of mine in this very special Alpha community. I'm Chris, a Filipino/PR working here in Singapore for almost 12 years ![]() The photos that I'll be sharing here are those that I like the most and memorable to me. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ This photography journey of mine started one day when I stopped playing bowling due to arm injury(not from playing it though) and enticed about this DSLR thingy when I was strolling at an IT show around Aug.07 and saw this N D40 Kit selling at around $800+...wow..good deal..almost buy one.. my wifey stopped me to get it. From there, since no DSLR yet, I started playing with my Sony P&S S60 and with some Internet search about Photography and forums, I became a lurker in CS,..lurking until early morning which makes my wife ask me whether I still want to sleep or not.. Having inspired by the photos being posted there, I posted this sunset shots taken from an airplane using my S60. Sunset shot from an Airplane With a very encouraging comments and feedback received, I became more eager to get a DSLR...(inflicted by a BBB virus already )For more than a month of lurking into Photography forums, the time came that I could not resist a poison of BBB and eventually bought my 1st SLR/DSLR - a Sony A100 with 2 Kit Lenses on the night of Oct.23,2007. (Should have waited 2 more months then it's A200 already) During that night with a very itchy hands, I took this shot below and became my 1st Critic posting in CS and waited for folks there to see and whack it. "Night Shift" ![]() Lens used : 75-300mmf4.5-5.6 Well, while it is anticipated that comments can be good and bad, I set to myself that it is part of a learning curve that I have to take and absorbed in order to learn further. From then on, I bring my cam whenever I go out of the house...yeah..everyday that is..hehe Aside from shooting my kids, I shoot whatever is interesting, learn how to compose and most importantly post it to share for people to judge it. How photography affected/changed my life? Hmmn..Looking at the viewfinder and burning some shutter counts makes me more appreciate things which looks ordinary..but beneath shows the wonders and beauty that we don't usually see. Sharing it with family and friends makes them appreciate what is photography too...guess what...it makes my BBB of accessories or lenses (that'll compliment my Kit and reasonably price) easier to justify to my wife ![]() Here are some of my favorite shots: I first ventured into Abstracts and Still life which provide to be a good training for what they say as 'composition'. Abstracts and Still life also are easier to shoot as they are all around us. ![]() A shot of our Lamp / Lens Used : 75-300mmf4.5-5.6 --> Full Size here ![]() ![]() ![]() Lens Used : 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 Why I like those shots? coz they look ordinary, but with photography, a bit of imagination and some PP touches they become interesting and shows the beauty beneath. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ With the thinking of shooting more, the bug of Night shooting then hit me, went out till midnight just to shoot shoot shoot to learn.. My First Night Shots ![]() ![]() ![]() Lens Used : 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 : Click here for bigger size Why I like those shots? It shows the soothing calm reflection in the water, lovely golden lights, the vivid colors and the bright moon which serves as the lighting to the skycrapers. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ On the first week of January08, I met bro Ming, one of the great bros here (on one of a supposed BBB transaction) and informed me about this Alphadslr Forum and yeah, it's really nice to be here - a great and better community. I joined my first outing on the same month of January08 at SBG and met more great bros there, shooting Macro and Sunbird and started to be poisoned by there gears - A700, macro lenses, super/tele-lenses ..but no money to buy one.. Thanks to bro Ming for lending me his Sigma 70-300 1:2 Macro, got some goods shots with it and...I eventually bought it from him Below is one of the shot from that outing which became a memorable one for me, 1 of my first macro shots from my 1st outing and became my 1st entry for a photo competition at this forum and what a surprise that it won 2nd place. Many thanks for those who voted for it. It also happens that I submitted it as an entry at another forum and it won 1st place. (1) The Earth and Moon in Droplets - January 2008 Alphadslr Photo Competition - Theme : It's a small world 2nd Place | Lens Used - Sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6, borrowed from Bro Ming. SBG outing is a great opener for me to appreciate more the beauty of Nature which from then on I became addicted to macro photography..trying several method..like use of MG(yeah Magnifying glass..hehe), +4 CU Hoya Filter and eventually Reverse lens (Cos no budget to get a dedicated macro lens) I was amazed with what a reverse lens macro can do, though it needs a lot of patience to get some good shots..or should I say - you must be possessed by passion. This is what I called a poor man's macro but serves me well though. Here are some reverse reverse macro shots from my collection. ![]() ![]() ![]() Lenses used : 18-70mm + either cannibalized Yashica Lens or Cosina 50mmf1.4 Why I like those shots? Well, I find them not the usual insects shots - the pose/action in obscene, the bubblegum of the fly, and a spider inside the folded leaf. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Having an opportunity to submit photos for competition, I just submit what I think is nice to me.. though I must admit mine is too newbie to be compared to the winning photos of our Alpha bros. I guess this is to see how my photos will fare and in return will give me more insight on how can I be better next time. My lucky winning photos: (2) World of droplets - September 2008 Alphadslr Photo Competition - Theme : Water ![]() 1st Place | Lens used : 18-70mm + reversed 50mm f1.4 | Shot at National Orchid Garden inside the Cooling Area Why I like this shot? well, the droplets are really awesome to see, converted it to mono to emphasize more on the droplets. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ (3) 3 Red Roses - October 2008 Alphadslr Photo Competition - Theme : Flower ![]() 1st Place | Lens used : 18-70mm + reversed 50mm f1.4 Why I like this shot? With the idea of using droplets to project a flower, I thought it would make my entry a little bit different as I won't be shooting a flower directly. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ These are not winning photos but memorable ones too.. A Photo for my grandma ![]() Shots from Singapore's 1st F1 Night Race (Great experience to be there!) ![]() Lens used : Beercan 70-210mmf4 ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Now, I am moving forward to learn more...but this time into Portraiture and my kids are my in-house models but only when they are in good mood ![]() My Daughter - using an Industrial fan to create the hair effect..hehe ![]() The Alphadslr Portraiture outing provided me some ideas and shooting techniques by observing how the bros shoot, however, I didn't have the chance to finish that event as had to go back early due to some other personal schedule. Joined my 1st TFCD outing organized by bro P3(Terry) and many thanks to him for giving me chance to join. My 1st TFCD Shoot - Lovely "Ruchin" ![]() and the recently TFCD Shoot - Pretty "Elisa" ![]() There are still a lot of things to learn on this portraiture photography, so joining outings (whether TFCD or paid shoot) will help us to improve our craft further. Post Processing (PP) is another thing - skin smoothing, skin tone..etc..etc..and I am looking forward to learn further from our Portraiture masters here if got the chance ![]() ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Advice for new members? As I am also new to this hobby and from my very little experience, here's my little advice to newbie photography hobbyist like me.. - SSS See - open up to the moments and beauty around us Shoot - capture it and be part of our recorded memories.. Share it...and be open to what people say as it will be one of the keys for our improvement. ..if kena whack, just take it and learn from it. - PPP - Learn not only PP but learn to achieve more Patience, Perseverance to unleashed your real Passion for Photography. - BBB - when you have the means - go ahead, if not then just enjoy what you have. I have extensively used my 2 kit lenses as no budget to buy better lenses and both served me well. For me photography is about shooting pictures with your heart in it, gears are the utility derived from getting the pictures we want, but it may not be the hindrance on getting the pictures we can love and proud of. - Lastly, join Outings as this will help us to know more great bros and sis' and learn from each other. Many for reading...this is maybe long but I hope that I did share my bit and pieces about this very addictive and expensive hobby of photography...Learning is never ending and it will always be an S-Curve...so just always look forward and shoot it.. Cheers and more power to everybody and our beloved Alphadslr Forum! Edited by cthep2, Dec 19 2008, 04:25 PM.
