Ming is indeed a changed man! :)

Rleon, i'm sure you and i are not the only ones who couldn't find the stand ;) and just to repeat the same advice we tried dishing out to Ming, shoot with what you have first. it must always be a technical need that starts the BBB process, which should involve a lot of homework, otw not only pocket will burn, even underwear will be reduced to ashes... so in other words, shoot more as bro P3 says.

Bros, appreciate your advice. :thumbsup1:

As my shoots are all indoor, dat's y I wanted to get a low light lens. I've read thru the review on both Sony n Sigma 50mm, Sigma turns out to be better in performance but pricey. That's the reason I want to find out the difference in price. :ashamed:

If the price not much of a difference (2-300?), I'm willing to pay more for a better quality lens. :P

i'd be surprised if the sigma is more expensive than the sony. are you sure they are comparable models? or were you actually looking at the sigma 50mm macro instead? the sony or old km 50mm f/1.7 will suffice. A-mounters have the advantage of pushing up iso to 800/ 1600 w/o or little noise ;) that's if its really necessary. but don't go jump into a flash unless you can always use flash. what are you shooting indoors?

Have you considered the Minolta 50mm F1.7?
I got it 2nd hand for 200...

Pretty good to me...i think the F1.4 is going for 400 at 2nd hand...

Reference to dpreview:
Sony 50mm F1.4
Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM

Hope I really not dat blurr
Not sure abt the price but Sigma is twice as heavy as Sony in weight.

Most of the time it's family, friends gathering. Thought it would be good to start with a portrait/landscape lens. ^o)

woah... the 1.4 is a poison lens. frankly, for speed, it doesn't perform that much better than the 1.7. i got mine at $300+, a very good deal for a mint lens, otw i'd never have bought it. my 1.7 has served me very well and still does.

for gatherings, yeah, you may want to go get a flash at some point, but the onboard flashes on the sony dslrs are quite respectable, so do consider the 1.7 (ok, hunt a little, i think that's a big part of the fun of the hobby anyway) and try that first.

I've go thru the forum Sigma Lens review. Lens not listed, is this new? I try not to get lens of the same range.. The setback for Sigma should be the weight. If I do come across a copy of mint 1.7.. :)

The on board flash makes the subject very bright, backgound dark, the 58 gives a smoother overall finish.

After a few shots, I realised the flash adaptor connected to the horse shoe part is quite flimsy, a bit shaky. : Is it normal for all flashes? Wil the mounting break if I turn too often? :faint:

hi Rleon,

ALL my flashses are loose when mounted. got a simple solution for u and others to fix this. u'll need scotch tape and a penknife.

cut a small strip of scotch tape (abt 5mm) and paste it on the underside of the flash shoe.

should be tight fit. when the tape wears off, just replace.

the 1.7 i mentioned is KM, the 1.4 too. not sure if sigma made the 1.7 50mm. 2nd hand copies of km50mm going for about $180 on avg currently.
as for exposure with onboard flash, try shooting in "M"anual mode, and play around with your shutter speed. lower speeds will allow better exposure of your bg.
