The Joy of photography

Photography is a life long hobby for me, since I started during my early secondary school days. As much as I enjoy the photo taking process, it was the friends sharing the same passion at different stages of my life that make the hobby all the more personal and endearing. As technology advances, the internet has made the world so much smaller and sharing so much easier. I’m privileged to have known many of you and made a few very close friends. Though I have wished to join you more often, but my work and family commitments often hinder my desire.

Nevertheless, I’m grateful for this opportunity to share some of my shots with all of you. I’ve been asked to showcase my TFCD shots. But I’ve included some models shots and favorite portraits, else I have very little to show. :$ Many of the shots you may have already seen it before, but I would like to consolidate and list them here under one thread. For other stuffs, you are welcome to visit my flickr site to check them out.

Little Girl

This is one of my all time favorite series. She has a very special look, gentle and yet expressive. I was at the beach chasing her little brother with my camera when I saw her with her mother. I sort permission form her mother to take picture of her. I started to pet talk to her as she slowly warmed up to me. And while she was chatting away, I got down on my knee and took a series of her shots. I guess, one mistake we often made when taking kids shots, was to stand and shoot at a top down angle. In doing so, we would make them look shorter. It would be better if we were to kneel or squat down and take the shot at their eye level.

This was from my first paid model shoot organized by eow at that time. I like this particular shot taken with the 35mm at f2 and 1/20 sec without flash at a dimly lit Hotel lobby. The SSS of Sony really shine in these situation. I think I would have ruined the shot if flash was used. In many cases, I find myself not using flash since acquiring the anti shake feature. Direct flash often cause the shots to look flat and I would avoid whenever I can. However, a light burst of fill flash actually helps if under very harsh back light condition.

Leana

(warning…deadly CZ poison)

It was a rare opportunity at that time to be able to shot inside the arrival hall of T3 when it was just newly completed. I think we created some commotions that day as there was quite a big group of us shooting Leana. I like this particular shot the most. Taken with the Tamron 17-50mm, a lens I like quite a lot on APS-C size sensor. Sharp and good. The wide and low angle shot made her looked tall and slender against the backdrop.

Tested the CZ135 for the first time and liked it a lot. Alas my pocket doesn’t agree with me…

A shoot organized by Willis. I took this shot in a dark alley with strong red light casting. The disused picture frame provided a nice framing on the subject. I post processed it to have an old golden rustic look to it to cover up the red cast. Turn out quite nicely and I must say I like this shot a lot. In many occasion, a strong post processing skill can save a lot of your shots that were otherwise wasted and turn it into a gem. :thumbsup1:

Lee Jia

This was quite an adventurous outing as it was taken at the Kranji War Memorial. Many thanks to P.3 for organizing the TFCD and Lee Jia for such great courage. It created some visuals that are out of ordinary. Could have done a better job if I were able to give it a darker look. Perhaps a sadder looks or even a tear or two would certainly made a big different.

Jesslin

I like the pouting of Jesslin with her bright lovely eyes in this shot. Some times, these are the smallest of facial expression that sets the photo apart from others. It’s something that the models have to work and capitalize on. Willis often called it “The Killer Looks” and I quite agree. But it is entirely up to the models. Some models have only one look, and after a while, you‘ll find it difficult to continue as the looks are so monotonous. But Jesslin is quite lively and adventurous.

I think this one will also look quite nice in black and white.

Tiffany

If Jesslin is lively and adventurous, Tiffany is more creative in her posing. She was simply all over the places and you had to keep up with her. With a friendly demeanor and a bright sunshine smile always on her face, a pleasure indeed to shot her.

Ruchin

First time shooting with my A900 and I was a little conservative. Made quite a few mistakes and wasted some frames too. But overall, the shoots really come to life in the final moment, when Ruchin were finally able to deliver the “Killer Looks” that were mostly missing from the first part. Again, certain expression suits certain people with different clothings and surroundings. It pays to experiment a bit. So modeling is not just a pretty face. It takes commitment and lots of hard works.

Sindy

Last but not least, Sindy. She was rather easy to shoot. I think she has more experience than the occasional TFCD girls, so, there’s no problem for her to deliver the posts and looks.

Finally, one of the joy of photography is alway in seeing the improvement and progress we've have made over the years. There are no bad photographers only lazy one. I think each of us has a different way of taking the shots. But if we pay attention to apply the basic one third rules and move around a bit, I think most of us can deliver good portraits shot. Hope you've enjoyed some of my mine. Thank you. :)
