Basically any tripod can function as monopod. Close up the legs.. Or extend and use only one leg. Really! But really buying monopod.. 1) Just make sure you get one that can support the weight of your setup (camera + lens + ballhead). I got one that is really portable and light but it cannot support my 400mm lens.. it actually wobbles. Useful for shooting event (came+wide lens only), light setup only. 2) Screw (to ballhead & camera) Smaller monopod usually for pns & smaller dslr do not need ballhead, so the screw size fits the camera base directly. But to use a ballhead on these monopod you may need a screw adapter, call bushing, to convert to a larger screw that fit the ballhead. 3) You may need a monopod "tilt" head - one that can let you change angle upward/downward. No need panning since monopod itself allows you to turn any direction. Some monopod come with builtin " tilt head". A socket type ballhead can be used as well.. |

But tripod more stable. Sections depends on model.. Velbon 50LX http://www.amazon.co.uk/Velbon-Ultra-Stick-50LX-Monopod/dp/B000923HCC Super small and compact (closed 33cm). I like the Velbon Twist mechanism. This is only if your setup is light. Otherwise if you never tighten enough, you find it slipping in.. Small screw. Opteka MP100 (reminds me of my Yonex racquet haha..) http://www.amazon.com/Opteka-MP100-Photo-Video-Monopod/dp/B0002RBQO0?bcsi_scan_8769ABB642139EEF=y4Q2ZPsWVglWn/rn6D+R+SkAAACJV0wz Cheap and good. But small screw. 400mm still ok. For Reliable ones Go for Manfrotto or some of the established brand.. Clip lock better la.. Edited by Birder, Feb 5 2009, 02:00 PM.

Not anytime that soon. Everyone is busy haha.. The Lau brothers have regular session on Wednesday at Bedok, last I heard. Can join them if you want. Back to monopod... I have one Manfrotto 681 series which is solidly good as well.. ![]() Tilt head. Get this plus any monopod.. you are ready to move ![]() http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-234RC-Monopod-Quick-Release/dp/B001A1POLS This one can get in SG about $30+, if I remember correctly. Maybe you want to check if you can do an MO then share the shipping cost from Amazon? |

Yes , i am using the Manfrotto 681B too . But i have to switch my one & only Ballhead from Tripod to this Monopod . More than enough for me to use with the 300mm , its light & durable too . Got another small Manfrotto 790B Monopod for PNS too . Edited by Ming, Feb 5 2009, 03:36 PM.

Was browsing for Monopod and I saw this design. There is a metal piece for you to step on to add more stability to it! haha reminds me of those old model tyre air pump! ![]() |

there was a video clip (youtube or some other) where this guy DIYed one using a very simple concept - a bolt/ screw that's the same size as a standard tripod plate screw, attached to a small metal strip by a - get this - fishing line (prob 20lb) it works on reverse tension, instead of resting your setup on a monopod, you lift it instead and the resistance provides stability. the whole thing is cheap cheap and also tucks into a pocket. quite an innovative design. |
