Today, while meeting a customer, we manage to know both of us has DSLR. In conversation, we started talking about camera features and lenses. He started to talk about how it is better to get IS on the lens and start asking which lenses I have has IS.

I told him I am using Alpha, so, there is no need of IS on the lens, since IS is in the body, any lens would work fine. He was completely shock, and regretted not buying an Alpha.

I find it very strange, I thought this is a common knowledge? No?

(FYI, he is from C camp).

IS is known as Image Stablizer.

Canon introduce it as IS, Nikon introduce it as VR and KM/Sony introduce it as Anti-Shake. Technically, the objective is the same, which is to reduce handshake motion.

IS and VR is on the lens, while Anti Shake is on detector. :D

Well most people buy DSLR is usually influenced by what their friends use, they tend not to do a full market. As newbie, you might not know what you really want and what is important to individual.

;)
Cheers :)

i think reason behind the 'marketing fail' is due to the fact that KM is still around and therefore SONY cannot outright use their name? i'm just guessing ah, copyright issues.

KM has divested away from many biz lines and i believe now focus on printing tech. the basic problem - since KM's time and now sony's, is that they never marketed the AS/ SSS feature properly. call it any name, and the appeal is still there, but they have not touted it enough.

i've friends from other camps who were surprised/ shocked that we have AS/IS/VR in the BODY while they have to pay premium for each lens on their system that provides stablization.

AS/SSS is one feature alone that will win many users - if only the marketing guys focus on this iso celeb endorsement...

Maybe I should count myself lucky?

As a newbie, I am aware of AS/IS issue, but it didn't struck me as a very significant issue. I choose not go to C, simply because, at the time (about 3 months back, when I decided to get a DSLR) I have a project that related with C (supplying some system for their data centre). The project hit a rough patch (now is OK, back then, I think both sides were quite irritated by each other). So, I simply don't want to get a C DSLR at the time.

For N, I had a few chances to visit some online forums of N, they seems more "prideful" of their equipment. If someone tried to suggest something else, it get shot down very hard. I decided, these are not the crowd I want to learn from. However, in real life, I have some opportunities to meet some N users (after I bought Alpha), they don't behave like those in forums. In fact, some share experiences on various settings that should give a better result. Since, when it comes to picture taking, the language we speak of is generally about aperture, shutter speed, white balance, ISO and composition. These are universal whether you are in C, N or S camp (or even for other DSLR) has little differences. They don't look down at Alpha at all.

Since, I have a Sony point-&-shot cam for about a year, and I like the it a lot, so I thought why not just go for Sony DSLR. Frankly, this is the main reason for me.
