Maybe I should count myself lucky?

As a newbie, I am aware of AS/IS issue, but it didn't struck me as a very significant issue. I choose not go to C, simply because, at the time (about 3 months back, when I decided to get a DSLR) I have a project that related with C (supplying some system for their data centre). The project hit a rough patch (now is OK, back then, I think both sides were quite irritated by each other). So, I simply don't want to get a C DSLR at the time.

For N, I had a few chances to visit some online forums of N, they seems more "prideful" of their equipment. If someone tried to suggest something else, it get shot down very hard. I decided, these are not the crowd I want to learn from. However, in real life, I have some opportunities to meet some N users (after I bought Alpha), they don't behave like those in forums. In fact, some share experiences on various settings that should give a better result. Since, when it comes to picture taking, the language we speak of is generally about aperture, shutter speed, white balance, ISO and composition. These are universal whether you are in C, N or S camp (or even for other DSLR) has little differences. They don't look down at Alpha at all.

Since, I have a Sony point-&-shot cam for about a year, and I like the it a lot, so I thought why not just go for Sony DSLR. Frankly, this is the main reason for me.
:sofunny: u sounded like my friend, who use sony p&s and think go for sony dslr.

its the picture that counts. no matter how good ur gear is, u can't shoot and dunno the basics, u suck.
how many new dslr users out there nowadays? its very to identify on the streets nowadays. its so cheap for entry setup that ppl are buying and do not know what they are buying. The first step is to learn from basics

Many newbies will take friends advice on what to get, what is good wat is bad. alot of times, the friends are also newbies who went into dslr not long too. its like learning from wrong people and getting worst. Learn by shooting, get what best suits u, there is no good or bad. it depends on how you fully utilise the camera's capability

...
Hehe... Sometimes, the main reason to buy something is really just that simple.

Though, I have to admit, once I started reading into various specs and features of DSLR, I discover P&S and DSLR are world different apart.

Now I hook! Maybe would go for A900 next year. :)

I dun felt tat Sony fail in their marketing......In-fact they had success in what Minolta fails to do even with wonderful product way back to the xi series :)

Being a well-known organisation who have an image of strong R & D, they might be unwilling to promote technology that's not by them. If Sony do that, pple might just see the success of Alpha largely due to Minolta. Till the day they r able to tune the SSS into something of their own, it might remain just as "one of the feature" in Alpha.

Speaking for myself, I still love Minolta more than Sony for now :P

i can't see how diff can SSS get.. RSSS? ISSS? really super steady shot? instinctive super steady shot? anyway by the time they do come up with some funky technology, they'd have lost precious marketing ground. what would be worrying for us A-mounters is the brand does so bad that eventually sony decides to sell the camera division or worse, close it down. then we will have SSSS suay suay suay suay...

my personal opinion on the matter.. don't flame me hor
:)

IS (or SSS) in alpha body is what attracted me.
heck, all 3rd party lenses and old lenses have instant IS! isn't that great or what..
the strange thing is (a topic that was much talked about earlier, i suppose) sony lenses, despite not having IS on lens, are still quite expensive (not much cheaper compared to similar spec lenses from C and N).
that is just bad pricing policy..

that's why i always remind myself to compare 3rd party lenses when looking for lenses that have similar spec with sony's one.
example: 18-250, 70-200 sony vs tamron.
If the 3rd party's IQ is respectable, why not consider it? you'll save some $$
IS is taken care of by the body anyway right?

Bad pricing policy for lens???
Let me compare base on retail price on those lens roughly on the same league.

$3,669 = VR 70-200/2.8 G IF-ED
$3,300 = 70-200/2.8 L IS USM
$2,999 = 70-200/2.8 G

$2,269 = 85/1.4D IF
$3,899 = 85/1.2 L II USM
$1,999 = CZ 85/1.4

$629 = 50/1.4 USM
$529 = 50/1.4

$2,600 = 35/1.4 L USM
$2,199 = 35/1.4 G

cannot compare like that la

the 70-200 hv to compare with non IS ones

$3,669 = VR 70-200/2.8 G IF-ED
$2,199 = 70-200/2.8 L USM
$2,999 = 70-200/2.8 G

the nikon no choice for 70-200 dun hv non VR. only the 80-200 hv...
$2,020.41 = 80-200mm f/2.8D ED
