Hi BryanTree, What body are you using ? The 70-400G focus very slowly on my A700. A friend mention only fast in A900. No sure it is true. Anyway, if you still need a long range, on a bright day outdoor in a BMT POP, you can rent my Tamrom 70-300 f/3.5-5.6 if you like. http://www.tamron.com/lenses/prod/70300_di_a017.asp |

can do la... unless u need better image quality just to buy the better lens to shoot pop. most of the time u will be shooting using ur wide angle of the parade and using wide to shoot closeup infront of ur bro. i see last time my pop photos my sister took for me, most are wide.

Since it will be a bright sunny day, your 70-300 is more than enough. Or you can get a 2X TC. Still okay on a sunny do but no AF. Did not have one to rent. Planning to buy one soon. |

Hmm... I have been trying to use MF but dunno how to determine when It is the sharp point... Sometimes the LCD on my a300 shows sharp but load onto com and view... Then it is blur.. |

hi bryan, sigma 70-200mm HSM is supported by sony cam. If you noticed, those AF lens without HSM or SSM, their AF are driven by the in-body motor of ur camera body. You will notice that there is a knob(something like a pan screw driver head) sticking out of the camera and on the lens mount, you will find the matching knob(something like a screw driver head). Thats y with normal AF lens, the lens AF speed(the rotating of the focus ring, not the AF confirming speed) depends alot on the camera inbuilt motor. But when it comes to HSM or SSM, this driving knob is not used. Instead, the AF is done by the in-built motor(Sigma uses ultrasonic ring type drive). Thats when the old sigma lens with HSM, is not supported by sony. maybe they have not RE the signal sent out by sony camera body to instruct the lens motor to rotate the focus ring. But then, from the email from sigma, there are currently only 4 HSM II lenses that they have made to support the HSM function. But then, whether the AF speed(driving the focus ring) is as fast as SSM or isit at the same speed as normal sony/minolta AF lens driven by inbody motor, you have to test it out. Since so far, the guy i contacted at dyxum only owns HSM lens but not SSM lens, so he also cant comment much either. All my inputs are based on my research so far from internet and through asking users of HSM II lens. BTW, USM, SSM ,HSM are independent technology by the lens makers that uses the ultrasonic motor to drive the lens. They may be using the similar technology, there will still be some difference. At the end of the day, what determines the final AF speed is a combination of your AF speed(whether driven by camera inbuild motor or HSM,SSM)+ your AF confirming speed of your camera. |

I consider having a longer, better lens as of secondary importance. I say, a two kit kens combo does well for the POP parade... think a range of wide and close ups are important to make the story of the POP parade whole. More important than having a long enough lens is - location. Whether you can move around the edges of the parade square to take a few photos is important... Being stranded in your seat and only reaching out with a long enough lens doesn't solve the problem or give you photos with a lot dynamics as compared to those you can take if you are unbound and free to move around as you still get photos from limited angles - it basically traps you to just those photos only... I say, stay with your kit tele. It should do you fine - I'm sure you won't be developing S8R photos for all of them... it'd break your bank yeah? ![]() Well, if you are shooting for web size... if it's 900 x 600 - it's 0.54mpx... (if it's for Facebook, it's even smaller... 0.24 mpx) It's like the whole 10 megapixels squeezed into an area that's 5% of the original size (or 2.5%)... Everything becomes super sharp when you use some bit of Unsharpen Mask, and CA becomes negligible (especially so if you stop your aperture down), and in bright light with the right focus settings, you should be catching most stuff, and AF should work fine and rather swiftly. ![]() So, just use what you have.
