sigma HSM is NOT supported on sony or km cameras. your lens will still AF but the speed is like any other normal lens. km never licensed SSM to sigma and i guess there's been no follow up with sony since the takeover either. hence HSM, as a standard on some of the sigma lenses, works only on other mounts. you'd be better off with the 70-300 (imo an extra 100mm reach is not going to be worth the money on the 70-400 as you already have the 70-300) and using manual focus. it just takes a little practice. |

its prob standard in the manufacturing/ badging process. even the website doesn't bother to clearly differentiate that HSM is not available for A mount. there's some small print thats easy to miss. Edited by Trigger Happy, Feb 8 2009, 09:52 PM.

as compared to what? the 7d? the a700 and 900 have faster af motors, so even my old crummy lenses have a new lease of life - well, at least until the body breaks the lens' drive shaft anyhow...haha |

its all about perception, most of us have accepted the speed of sigma lenses but once something is badged as HSM/ SSM, expectations can go through the roof. but generally i find that these 3rd party makes rank in this order of focus speed (sharpness is ironically in reverse): tamron, tokina, sigma. |
