Some 4 page discussion at the other forum http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=439699 and things are likely going to be repeated since the participants are the same bunch of people.. Anyway... Had the Sigma 70-200 EX DG, and now the SSM. Never tried the Tamron, but comparing the sigma to SSM, I sold off the sigma for 1/4 the price of the SSM. Is the SSM better? Sure it is.. but is it 4 times better? I don't think so. But values of a lens cant be measured quantitatively.. For me the value of the SSM lies in the confidence that it gives, whereas I would be hesistant to use the Sigma wide open. AF wise, the Sony wasnt noticeably faster.. and sometimes its so silent that you wouldnt know if it had locked on AF.. haha For me, I saved up using my first 2 salary and it was a sweet feeling when I finally got the lens after going through an painful ordeal of searching for the SSM when it went Out of stock last August... My advice: Get the one that your budget comfortably allows and make good use of it, from the discussions, seems like Tamron is optically good and if it meets your need, get it! My opinion is that AF speed isnt all that important if you practice the right techniques. Eg, if you are shooting a rugby game, you will be aiming at subjects eg >20m away and as you "track" the subjects, the camera doesnt need to change AF much. Unless you are switching focus from a near object to a far one often, or the lens hunt, AF speed shouldnt worry you too much. But still, the 70-200G SSM is real poisonous. Try it once and you will be poisoned. =) |

To be entirely honest, if you are just going for gear, SSM is the way to go. Photography isn't all about gear. Hart |

tamron 0.95m focus distance impress me alot... its good and its not slow on a700/a900. its a good lens if u wan to save 1k. u can get from BHphoto and Amazon at quite cheap price too. think BHphoto got no stock yet. built is good, optics is quite nice too, and not noisy. next to ssm will be the tamron if u wanna choose to save |

if you are just after a 70-200mm at f2.8 constant, then go with the tamron. performance-wise its prob better value for money, unless you need speed. the biggest draw of the sony or KM ver is the SSM motor, which has a much-faster focusing speed - i've used this to shoot soccer matches for the closer action shots. it works best for street shoots. the bokeh and colours are supposedly better too. for me that's not a real issue and I've not tested it against a tamron or tokina equivalent. |

Heard and seen from reviews, Tamron's optically very strong, quite the choice if you wanna save the money... It should fit the job very well, despite me owning the Sony 70-200 f2.8 SSM... Times are hard, and a lens that does its job is a good lens. Go for the Tamron, and save.

May want to consider the Minolta 80-200 f2.8 HS APO G (White). Based on my last use on this lens, it focus slightly faster than the SSM and slightly sharper than the SSM at 2.8. Only trade off is minimal focus distance (at 1.8m vs 1.2m [SSM]), rotating front element, non-removable tripod collar and cannot use Minolta/SONY TC. Picture quality and bokeh is good. Big problem will be finding a good one in the 2nd hand market. When you look for it, cannot find. When you not looking, there it appears with no buyer. |

bro, i have this too, but i dun think its faster than the ssm leh... the km 80-200 G has "kick" that perhaps gives the impression of speed. however this lens is a lot lighter than the km 70-200 ssm so i take it out more these days esp when i already have a heavy bag. |
