so is it a backup disk? if so and you have your originals, then it would definitely be cheaper to just bin this and buy a new one - prob a diff brand

bro... sorry to correct your use of terminology. It's confusing to me and some others. "Backup" means a copy of the original. ie if you have 2 hdd ( A & B ) and "B" is a backup of "A", it means the data content in "B" duplicates the data in "A". In the event there is any failure in "A", you can use "B" to recover/restore the lost data in "A". If however you have A & B and both contain totally different data in it and there is only one copy of the data in either "A" or "B", both are considered main disk. From your description looks like the disk having the problem is one of your main disk. Sorry to hear your problem and all the best in recovering the data in it.
