Hi guys, I was just wondering if the Minolta 70-210mm F3.5-4.5 would be a good buy considering I already have a SAL55200 kit lens for my A300? Is it significantly better in terms of IQ and other aspects? If its significantly better I would consider selling my kit lens to finance the cost of the Minolta lens... As for the kinds of photo I'm intending to take, I'm pretty much a newbie so I'm still trying out different styles. Thanks so much in advance! |

the 55-200 is a decently sharp lens limited only by the fact that it is a apsc only lens meaning it not for ff camera like the a900 , whereas the 70-210mm f3.5-4.5 can be used on both the apsc and ff camera, however as it is a old minolta design...sharpness wise it might not be at as good as the 55-200 in certain focal length |

i've had the sony 55-200mm dt lens before. i find it sharp throughout the focal lengths, and most importantly its quite sharp at wide open apertures. here's a shot at 120mm, f4.5, 1/40s, iso400 on a Sony a100. jpeg straight out of camera. after that i had the minolta beercan 70-210mm f4. although it had a faster aperture, i find that i do need to stop it down to get better sharpness. so essentially, the effective apertures of these 2 lenses were about the same to me. the beercan also suffers more from chromatic aberrations as compared to the 55-200mm. i think the sony 55-200mm should deserve much more credit than it is given at the moment. its cheap sharp and light weight. but the focusing speed is horrifically slow on the A100 though. |

Thanks for the advice so far... seems like I should stick to my 55-200mm. Haha. |
