one way to beat date-based viruses is to make your PC clock's inaccurate by setting the date one day earlier or later. of course, good antivirus s/w AND UPDATED virus signatures is key to staying safe. good practices like not visiting *certain* types of sites, not opening dodgy attachments etc will help you stay safe.

US-CERT recommended that Windows users apply Microsoft security patch MS08-067 to help provide protection against the worm.

.
.

You can check if your system is already patched with MS08-067 by checking your "add/remove programs" in control panel. It should show "xxxx Hotfix KB958644" installed.

Microsoft patch:

Apply the correct patch for your Operating system

if "automatic updates" is turned on (for Windows users), it should download the latest MS patches all the time. Koh's brought up a good point, make sure your OS is patched too!

Extract from US-CERT

The presence of a Conficker infection may be detected if a user isunable to surf to the following websites:
*http://www.symantec.com/norton/theme.jsp?themeid=conficker_worm&inid=us_ghp_link_conficker_worm
* http://www.mcafee.com
If a user is unable to reach either of these websites, a Confickerinfection may be indicated (the most current variant of Confickerinterferes with queries for these sites, preventing a user fromvisiting them). If a Conficker infection is suspected, theinfected system should be removed from the network. Majoranti-virus vendors and Microsoft have released several free toolsthat can verify the presence of a Conficker infection and removethe worm. Instructions for manually removing a Conficker infectionfrom a system have been published by Microsoft in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962007.

Best not to on your computer on 1 & 2 April 2009
