Any can be. To me I will use 24-105mm zoom lens or 50mm for prime.

Using prime lens as walkabout lens is all up to your creativity in composing your shots.

In comparison between prime and zoom lens, you need to experience more on shooting with this 2 lens. Then you will notice what the difference between this 2 lens.

i do street shoots mainly with a zoom. there was an alphadslr outing some time ago to little india where we used only 50mm. that was a challenge. recently i did a street shoot/ test of the sigma 30mm. for street shoots i'll still go with a zoom. something like a 28-200/ 300 would be ideal. otw its two bodies, one with a 16-80/ 18-70 and another with a 70-200 or 80-200.

why?

depending on what you are after. if you are trying to shoot buildings, architecture, landscape, a prime would work but its tough/impossible/risky getting a portrait shot of a stranger with even an 85mm prime. by the time you move here and there.. well.. hence tough/ impossible/ risky ;)

Walkabout lens.. must be fast lens.. as the moments are there for just few seconds as you walk about.. :)
So, previously, I always use prime lenses (because KM5D AF is slow).. now, zoom lens (A700 and A900 - fast enough).

So, zoom lens is better choice as you have more option to zoom in or wide open.
Furthermore, the new Sony CZ and G lens is sharp - as good as prime.

i've one more thought on focal length for street shoots - it depends on how close you want to get to your subject versus how close you can get to your subject. for absolute candid shots, 200mm would be ideal, sometimes i'll shoot from across the street *hopefully* w/o being noticed. but for static displays, sure, even a macro lens or 30mm f/1.4 would give nice DOF :)

you can wind up carrying multiple bodies/ lenses like me, or work with what you are prepared to carry and accept certain limitations, which will often exist anyway. :)

Thanks all!

@TriggerHappy, currently I only have 1780 and beercan, by using a beercan sure a lot of people looking at me even I shoot from across the street:)

@SteelBird, and do you have it? how good it is in APS-C? If you have and don't mind, I would like to try it maybe during the next outing:)

@Eyethruthelens, agreed! I'm thinking to buy a zoom lens with 28-105 (if there is) focal length and constant aperture to replace kit lens and one prime lens for low light shoot. Beercan is good but heavy and the min focal lenght is 70mm, i think it is 85mm if mounted on APS-C. CMIIAW. Sony G and CZ is way more expensive so I prefer equivalent good/reputable KM/M lens which I think it's worth.

But at the moment, I still stuck on kits and beercan and to live with it, can't afford to purchase more lenses due to life priorities.

1780 ... ? Hidden Kang Tao number ah ?

In fact using combos like this 18-70mm & 70-210mm f4 is good enough to start off walkabout shoots !

V, then learn to keep a low profile, try to blend in w the crowd and bring up your camera only when you're going to take a shot. if spotted, smile :D if they respond kindly, take a shot otw start planning exit route while walking off slowly ;)

i don't know how the others feel abt street/ walkabout photography, but to me its more than just the equipment or the technical aspect. there's a need to be aware of the surroundings and a quick plan to approach the scene.

don't let equipment hinder you, its the practice that counts.

happy shooting :)
