Let me make it clear, I'm refering for astronomy purposes which need a very long exposure (min. 1min to 5mins exposure time). And really a different game ball with normal photography. No intend for jump ship just to get a spare body for this purpose. Trying not to say Sony cam not good or what. But in certain situation like doing astronomy when you required shooting Deep Space Objects which really out of our sight, sharpness is not so important, the motive is to details of lights and stars. Thats where a higher ISO with low noise system is required. If you have tons of noise then you have problem to detect and differentiate between the noise and faints stars. For normal photography, I've no argue with what I have right now. |

Hi Dom i had briefly own a Canon 30D before....reason been i need a camera that can af accurately and firmly in low light, prior before that i'm using the km5d. To a certain extent, the 30D performance is great when it came to af speed and accuracy .....but only when u used an L lens.. The nearest available IS lens back then for the apsc sensor was the 17-55mm f2.8 which cost more than 1.5K which cannot be used o n a FF camera. The cheapest available IS ff lenses back then is the 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 which cost abt 800 for new and around 500 for used. compare to the minolta 28-70 G (2nd hand around $1.2-1.3k) minolta 24-105 f3.5-4.5 around $300-350 even for the latest lenses...if u are comparing with Superzoom canon 18-200 IS $1199 nikon 18-200 VR$1299 sony 18-250 $759 Wide zoom canon 17-85 IS $899 Nikon 16-85 VR$900-1k sony 16-105 $759 ISO Performances slighty better high iso performances(at 100% pixel peeping) when reduce to smaller 4r print..u can hardly tell the diff Menu better and more intuitative menu (more so if u using A700 and abv) Af performance All are almost equal in good lighting Nikon and canon will be faster with their afs and usm lens in low light. However sony had the most sensitive Dual cross sensor af point (A700 and abv) i had ever came across. In the brightest and the darkest part of the scene...the A700 and A900 is able to focus wherea the the top of the line of the 1 series and D3 will hunt. Take a good look at the CS portrait forum... try to look for those using the canikon system..u will see that even with a high end cameras...the pics will look still look shitty if things went wrong. Even with the much vaunted fuji S5pro colour will still went off in certain circumstance. So All in all switching system is perfectly ok and there nothing to be worry abt....end of the day..u need to outweight the con and pro of each systems and most imptly yr need. |

funny thread isn't it... rather than asking how to capture/create gd image, u ask in a sony forum "which system to change to" and from the response, u can clearly see that the sony fanboys will keep on mentioning inbuilt body IS and CZ lenses(AF capable cos other system only MF, wats the BIG DEAL) i used to own A100 and i've shot wedding at ISO1600, A700(loan from a bro here) at ISO3200, there wasn a big issue. i too was not happy wif the noise, but one have to try to make the best out of it. go ask mr google "push processing" but i dump the A100 for another system which was an even older model cos it cant capture wat i wanted. have i regretted, need inbuilt IS, CZ lenses? HELL NO! so before asking which system is gd, ask urself, wat am i gonna use the cam for? remember this, an equipment is as gd as the one that uses(tink i better add tis, use it properly) it. cheers Edited by marah, Apr 16 2009, 10:18 AM.

With what I'm using currently, I've have big headache during post processing especially to get rid of the noise level. I thinks those bro who have attend with me during the star gazing they knew the problems which I currently face. |

Dom, i think the best way to determine which system handles noise best is to do a benchmark test, same subject, same settings, similar or same lenses. in fact there are some comparisons done already and you can see the diff. iirc sulhan posted something similar and i've come across one or two articles though did not bookmark them. so far i've not come across a digital system where the noise level is so low that it impresses my socks off. in fact i still hold to the view that sony's noise handling is superior. like i'd told you, some shoots that i'd done at iso800 in low light were pushed up, and the noise was still so low the editing team could not believe the exif. and these are c and n users who shook their heads in amazement. you mentioned you've seen pics on c that are not so noisy. you'll need to download the pics and view them on a monitor to see the details. some lcds won't show the noise in such detail. again, a side-by-side benchmark test would be the best. |
