So what you guys are telling me is that i don't really need a new lens and i should use what i already have? Hmmm interesting. So what do you guys suggest then? A bright softbox and umbrellas or strictly strobes?

Will my stock lens 18-70mm lens deliver me professional results if i was to setup my lighting accordingly?
Hi,

Well, strobes provide your "available light" - they are your light sources.

Softboxes and umbrellas are modifiers - they change the characteristic of your light sources, giving your subjects soft shadows and more even fill, or without them, a harder shadow line, and when used with a particular orientation and with a different setting, can usually create a sense of drama etc, it's up to your artistic interpretation.

Your stock lens 18-70 mm handles large photos at print resolutions very well when stopped down to around f8. So I think you can spend the rest of your cash onto your lights and their modifiers.

Cheers,
CA

I'm familiar with lighting coming from a video background in 3 point lighting set up. It seems similar in ways but yet its also different. In video, we don't use Strobes. We just use continuous Key, fill and back light for basic lighting techniques and adjusting the barn doors accordingly.

I'm not too familiar with strobes. I assume they are similar to a Flash mounted on a Hotshoe on your camera. And I assume they are fairly expensive. Now with a Strobe unit, how many strobes would it take to lit up a subject accordingly in a studio setup? I assume if my room isn't that big, i would only need one. And if I have a mounted flash on my camera, would it be necessary to have a strobe unit as well? How will that work out? use both or only one?

The reason why i didn't think i would need a strobe is because my lack of availability of space. I think i have just enough for a softbox and a umbrella and maybe a back lighting as continuous lighting.

Can anyone describe their lighting setup for a portrait studio setup?

Thanks

Ah it's the Local jargon for Post Processing, or Photo-shopping. :)

I realised that it's not heavily use outside Singapore because I hang out at other places too, and my friends from the states can't really catch that so I expect you not to catch that too. :)

i see, so you've been using continuous lighting. ok, as chaoxangel said, the strobes (or in your case the coninuous lights) are your light source. the eqpt you've been using for video *should* provide sufficient lighting for photography. and yes, your so-called kit lens is good enough. put the money elsewhere ;)

I don't actually have those video lights. But as i mention, i've used them before in a studio light set up for video. I'm just looking to get a lighting kit specifically for photography and i was looking to get either tungsten continuous lighting Softboxes and umbrellas or florescent lighting in softboxes and umbrellas.

This is the setup im looking/planning to get. Let me know what ya guys think.

Lighting kit:
1. Tungsten softbox and umbrella kit OR
2. Florescent softbox and umbrella kit

OR maybe just a single strobe kit.

Backdrop with diff muslin

and maybe a 50mm f/1.4 lens

Btw; how many strobes do you really need anyway in a studio for a basic shot?
