300mm F/4 is still too short for birding. And if you add a 1.4x TC, it will 420mm only, not to mention f/5.6.

If that is the case, you are better off buying the Sony 70-400mm.
Main reasons is that it is a Sony lens with warranty, at first hands lens.

Otherwise Tamron 200-500 can be another choice. Or Sigma 50-500mm.
Yes have tested the Tamron lens 200-500mm although at f 8 is consider sharp but the focusing is a little bit slow hahaha, have seen the 400mm minolta prime lens in e-bay, :knock: OMG the prices for used and no warranty and servicing from SSC is really a big headache for me. $4,550.00 IMO.
Will buy the 70-400mmG in others countries because of lack of confident in the lens QC control. Cannot believe wat i have seen in new lenses with particle inside. Five lenses I have inspected but all fail my QC visual test.

If you are really REALLY into birding THEN ONLY invest in prime lens.

Minolta 400f4.5 is around 4K, 300f4 around 1.8-2K, 300f2.8 (non-HS) 3K+, 300f2.8 (HS) 4K, 1.4x or 2x TC $400-500.

Other choice could be Sigma 500f4.5 prime. But with the weight and the support it requires (big tripod+ballhead) it will be breaking your back..

If you can find one at good price. No need to hesitate.

A 300 f2.8 with tc is still consirably good. Just ask aa2 who shoots 300f2.8 on A200 with 2x :)

When I was testing Canon 5DMkII with 300mm f2.8 + 2x TC (600mm @ F5.6), I quite like the performance at the kind of weight.

Hi,thanks brothers for all the information, after shooting birding in JBP realized the short of lens in birding, need to upgrade to a longer range, with the help of brother mino 1.4 Tele still fall short of range, if using 2 X tele with 70-200mm G f2.8 picture will be very soft. So brothers wat is the market value for this lens???. Have see one in E-bay n quite interested in it.
Yo bro! Thought during JBP, we did mention about the (rumor) new lens from Sony. Maybe you just wait a bit and see how. My feeling is, no need to rush for this lah.

Me not that serious into birding lah, so mime are cheaper lenses. Haha...

Hahahahah steel bird brother Sony 300mm f 2.8 is Extra X, It is not really worth to invest.Shooting nature had been always my dream as well.Brother Birder Already standby a 2X tele lens from Sony in case of big prime lens available to purchase from any source.I have just read the article from E-bay the 1.7Tele Minolta is a match for the F4 300mm Minolta lens, now my main worries are where can I get the services N repairs for this sort of lens should anything happen. As I know The SSc will not repair for old minolta lens.Hi ETTL very nice of the picture, I will not be able to sleep peacefully tonight because my mind is wondering off on the lens LOL.
